William Rabel
Posted by: Webmaster in Hall of Shame, High Schools, Language Arts, ME-FV, Ohio(5/31/07 - Initial BBT Report)
William Rabel, 27, a former English teacher and boys’ soccer coach at Lakewood High School, in Lakewood, Ohio today entered a not guilty plea to 29 counts of sexual battery, third degree felonies.

Rabel was accused in March of an inappropriate relationship with one of his students, a 17-year-old 12th grade female.
Rabel came to the attention of authorities when rumors circulated at the school that the girl told friends she and the teacher had sex at his house in October, 2006.
On March 21, the school became involved when the girl’s friend told a teacher of the alleged relationship. The teacher then brought the information to the school administration, which called in the police. An initial police report in the case was filed March 22 of this year.
When the allegations surfaced the school placed Rabel on ‘home duty’ with pay.
On March 26, Rabel apparently stabbed himself in the neck with a sharp object and spent the night in intensive care. When asked by police if he was trying to kill himself, Rabel allegedly replied “He was just being stupid.”
Rabel resigned from the school on April 16th, prior to any charges being filed.
Rabel was officially indicted on May 17th.
In spite of the prosecutions request for high bail owing to the allegation that Rabel had contacted the girl in spite of being ordered not to so, the judge set bail at $10,000 and re-ordered Rabel not to have any contact with the victim.
1/10/08 - Guilty Plea
William Rabel was today convicted of sexual battery.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 20th and Rabel will have to register for life as a sex offender.
3/12/08 - Sentencing
Today William Rabel was sentenced to two years in prison.
He was also designated a Tier 3 Sex Offender requiring him to register his address every 90 days for the rest of his life.

Yes, I will agree, Rabel was a great teacher. However, it doesn’t apply in this case. He had sex with a student. Rabel wasn’t a dumb guy, and he knew what he was getting into. Do I feel bad about it, yea, it sucks. However his situation is a direct result of his decisions, so lets not forget that.
Mr. Rabel was a great teacher.
Mr. Rabel had sex with a student.
These are two separate statements.
I hope you have a good life Rabel, if you ever read this. I suggest you move out of the U.S. only to get away from all the garbage that will follow you for the rest of your life.

mr.rabel was/is a good guy and teacher. he was my english teacher. and our english class has suffered a tremendous loss, without him being there. he was my favorite teacher and i had looked foward to going to his class everyday. i dont blame rabel or the female. because everyone makes mistakes. i refuse to look at rabel any different than how i looked at him before all this got out. rabel made me laugh when i was mad at him. he cheered me up when i was down. we’d make fun of each other, in a friendly way. he was just an all aroung good guy. i miss you rabel!!! and i hope when all of this is over that she and he can close that chapter of the book and NEVER look back. i love you and i support you rabel and ALWAYS will.

In putting together posts for this site we research each case. Time and time again we’ve run across similar comments in conjunction with newspaper articles, on blogs and web site regarding the offenders.
It seems that the majority of the offenders, both alleged and convicted, were held in high esteem by their students. There may well be something to the idea that teachers who best reach out to students are also the most vulnerable to crossing the line with their students.
This seems to be particularly the case in those instances where teachers become involved with older teens.

I would just like to say that regardeless of guilty or not guilty, Mr. William Rabel was an amazing teacher, probably the best I’ve ever had, English class is not the same, and before anyone decides to post anything angry or hurthful you should think about the students who this affects and how we’ve lost an amazing teacher and person from our educational lives.
