Valynne Asay Bowers, 39, a math teacher at Bountiful Junior High School in Bountiful, Utah has been arrested on allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old male student.
Bowers came to the attention of police when another teacher at Bountiful Junior High School went to her supervisor and reported that she had been having sex with a male student.
That teacher, Linda Richins Nef, then implicated Bowers, saying that Bowers had been having sex with the same boy since December, 2008.
As a result, Valynne Bowers was arrested Thursday night on charges of forcible sodomy of a child and child rape.
The Linda Richins Nef was expected to arrested today.
Officials say the alleged crimes involving Bowers happened at Bowers’ home since December of 2008.
Reportedly the boy was 13 when the sexual activity allegedly began and is now 14-years-old.
Bowers appeared in court Friday afternoon and her bail was set at $20,000.
03/10/09 – Case Update
Stunned by the alleged rape of a student by two of his teachers, Bountiful Junior High School principal Brent Stephens spent most of Monday pacifying teachers and parents.
03/16/08 – Arraignment
Valynne Bowers appeared in court today for arraignment.
Her attorney entered not guilty pleas on her behalf on felony counts of forcible sodomy and rape.
Bowers next court appearance is set for April 13 for a pretrial conference.
Bowers also conditionally waived her preliminary hearing today and her attorney indicated that he hoped to work out a plea bargain with the Davis County Attorney’s Office. If no deal can be made, the defendant can then request a preliminary hearing.
The judge ordered that Bowers have no contact with the alleged victim.
04/13/09 – Attorney Seeks Mental Evaluation
The attorney for Valynne Bowers is asking the judge to delay the case in order to provide time for a psychosexual evaluation to be done on Bowers before moving forward with a plea agreement.
Rich Gallegos, Bowers’ attorney, said, “I’m hopeful the state will be willing to work something out you know that I think is fair to the victim and fair to Valynne as well”.
Bowers will appear back in court on May 4.
05/05/09 – Court Appearance and Plea Deal Under Discussion
Valynne Bowers had a court appearance yesterday.
Bowers’ defense attorney indicated that his client may opt for a jury trial if prosecutors are unwilling to back away from the first-degree felony charges Bowers now faces.
Defense attorney Rich Gallegos is seeking a plea deal in which Bowers would plead guilty to third-degree felony unlawful sexual contact with a minor, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
06/01/09 – Plea Deal Still In Works
The attorney for Valynne Bowers has asked the court for more time to work out a plea deal with prosecutors.
Reportedly Bowers recently underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation and is in counseling.
Bowers’ attorney indicated that he is hopeful that we can work out a deal where she can get some type of probationary sentence.
06/29/09 – Bowers Rejects Plea Deal, Headed To Trial
Valynne Bowers has reportedly rejected a plea deal which would have required her to plead guilty to first-degree felony charges of rape and sodomy.
Reportedly, Bowers rejected the deal, believing the facts of the case did not match the charges.
The judge set the next hearing in the case for July 27th.
Defense attorney Rich Gallegos contends that Bowers was not in a “position of special trust” with the boy because she was formerly his teacher, not his current teacher at the time of the alleged sexual relationship.
Gallegos reportedly contends, “Nothing occurred during school hours; the contact was not initiated by her. She never used her position as a teacher. The victim came around to see her. Our position is she’s not a teacher when she goes home and is on her own time.”
07/15/09 – Bowers Wants Preliminary Hearing
Valynne Bowers, who conditionally waived her right to a preliminary hearing in March in apparent anticipation that she would settle the case with a plea deal to lesser charges is now requesting a preliminary hearing.
Bowers attorney has indicated that the defense and prosecution have been unable to agree to a plea deal and hat if plea negotiations did not work out, it was quite likely that Bowers’ case would go to trial.
07/20/09 – Preliminary Hearing Date Set
A preliminary hearing for Valynne Bowers has been set for August 28th.
Bowers is charged with one count each of rape and forcible sodomy, both first-degree felonies punishable by up to life in prison.
08/28/09 – Preliminary Hearing
A preliminary hearing was held today for Valynne Bowers.
During the hearing the alleged victim testified that he and Bowers had sex nearly every Friday night during January and February.
The boy further testified that he would come to Bower’s home, give her a 30-minute guitar lesson and then they would have sex.
The boy also indicated that he initiated all contact with the teacher.
At the conclusion of the preliminary hearing the judge ruled that Bowers must stand trial on rape and forcible sodomy charges.
10/22/09 – Court Appearance
Valynne Bowers appeared today in 2nd District Court in Farmington and entered not guilty pleas to six felony counts of rape and three felony counts of forcible sodomy.
Defense attorney Rich Gallegos continues to say 40-year-old Valynne Bowers has been “over-charged” by prosecutors and that there has been “no real movement” toward resolving the case via plea negotiations.
A status hearing has been set for November 5th.
11/05/09 – Trial Date Set
A three-day jurytrial has been set for Valynne Bowers on March 8, 9 and 10.
Additional court hearings are scheduled leading up to the trial.
Defense attorney Rich Gallegos told news reporters he will ask the jury to find Bowers guilty of the lesser crime of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a third-degree felony.
02/04/10 – Plea Deal Worked Out If Victim’s Family Approves
Both the prosecution and defense told a judge Thursday that a plea deal for Bowers had been reached and prosecutors said the only step left was for the victim’s family to approve it.
Reportedly, the exact details of the deal were not released in court because the victim’s family still needs to sign off on it.

“over-charged”? Only a woman who has some sort of twisted self image of herself as a good person, after raping a child, would come up with that sort of defense (or have her attorney present it). It seems like a lot women go to court with the idea that they’ll just keep saying no to every plea scenario presented to them until they can get their sentences down to something that won’t inconvenience them, or something that is reflective of how they truly are…good, but for that one little wrong thing they did.
I’m shocked by this story and also horrified by Peter’s comment – how you can call a 13 year old vulnerable boy a ’stud’ because he was systematically preyed on by not 1 but 2 female teachers is beyond belief – the damage they have done to this boy will be substantial – he will not be patting himself on the back thinking to himself ‘nice one’. I truly hate the double standards when it comes to male and female victims – they hurt in the same way, feel the effects in the same way – the ‘high five’ mentality to male rape victims especailly when the abuser is a famale needs to stop.
Of course Peter you are entitled to your opinion and no doubt some on it was said in jest but just think if that was you being preyed on by these women in the 30’s and 40’s would you call yourself a ’stud’ then or vomit every time you think how they used you???
This “boy” must be some stud to have not one but TWO teachers fighting over him! Too bad neither were all that good looking. Nevertheless, I’m very impressed to say the least!!!

Just like women to rat out their own once they get busted, making sure misery enjoys the company. Bull Dagger Bowers is another example of teenage hormones over powering any semblance of taste. We called women like her slam hogs.
She should be sentenced to get a new hair-do.
The 13 yo was on hormones… and probably looks like a 20 year old.

This is the wildest story yet. I would never believed it. Two teachers (30’s and 40’s) are boffing the SAME 13 year old boy!!? Not 16 or 17, but 13 years old? Holy yogurt what is this guy taking?
