(05/27/08 – Initial BBT Report)

Thomas Bavedas, 38, a former third-grade teacher at Waltersville School in Bridgeport, Connecticut has been arrested and charged on allegations that the raped a girl under the age of 16 on three separate occasions between 2001 and 2005.

Two days prior to being charged with the rape allegations, Bavedas was charged with possession of marijuana, cocaine and drug paraphernalia and released on $30,000 bond. Following his Friday arrest on three counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of risk of injury to a minor Bavedas was released on $100,000 bond.

Reportedly Bavedas, on the advice of his attorney, resigned from his job following his arrest on the drug charges.

The relationship between Bavedas and the alleged victim has not been revealed, however it is reported that Bavedas is known to the girl’s family.

07/17/08 – Another Arrest, Child Porn Charges

Thomas Bavedas was arrested again today, this time on allegations that he had more than 60,000 still photographs and more than 3,000 video images of child pornography on his home computer.

The latest allegations against Bavedas are the result of an examination of Bavedas’ computer by the Milford Police Department Computer Crimes Unit. The computer was seized at the time of his initial arrest.

It is alleged that Bavedas recorded himself engaged in a sex act in the presence of a minor and also took inappropriate photos of naked children. Police say they have identified the children allegedly victimized in Milford.

Following his latest arrest Bavedas is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.

12/23/08 – Yet Another Arrest

Thomas Bavedas already facing sexual assault and child pornography charges has been arrested once again on allegations he secretly videotaped girls changing into Halloween costumes.

Bavedas was charged Monday with nine counts of voyeurism and nine counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Bavedas was being held on $500,000 bond Monday on the latest charges. His next court appearance is set for January 6.

01/13/09 – Guilty Plea

Thomas Bavedas pleaded guilty today to employing a child in an obscene performance, sexually assaulting a child and possession of more than 50 images of child pornography

According to the Connecticut Post:

Bavedas, 39, faced more than 200 years in prison on numerous charges before agreeing to a plea deal that caps his sentence at 25 years, suspended after 18 years served, with 35 years of probation to follow. He can argue for less jail time at his sentencing hearing March 13, but won’t get less than the mandatory minimum of 10 years.

03/16/09 – Sentencing Delayed Due To Stroke

The sentencing of Thomas Bavedas may be postponed indefinitely for Thomas Bavedas who suffered a brain aneurysm and stroke on January 30th and has been comatose since.

Bavedas remains hospitalized at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

04/24/09 – Sentencing In Limbo

Thomas Bavedas is in a nursing home and is not able to assist in the proceeding, according to his lawyer, Edmund Q. Collier.

If Bavedas is not able to participate in his sentencing hearing within 18 months the case against him may have to be dismissed.

Bavedas is reportedly is in a nursing home and he can’t speak or follow a conversation for more than a few minutes, according to his attorney.

Bavedas brother has been appointed his conservator.

05/15/09 – Thomas Bavedas Ruled Incompetent

A judge today ruled that Thomas Bavedas is not competent to stand trial on charges filed against him in Bridgeport on nine counts of voyeurism and nine counts of risk of injury to a minor.

The judge ordered that Bavedas, who reportedly chatted with relatives before the hearing began, be committed to a state psychiatric hospital for a minimum of 60 days during which he will be re-evaluated.

The judge continued the case to July 9th.

Today’s hearing took place only 20 days after Thomas Bavedas was said to be in a nursing home and unable to communicate after suffering the stroke.

Bavedas faces between 10 and 18 years in prison after having previously pleaded guilty in the Milford case to employing a child in an obscene performance, sexually assaulting a child and possession of more than 50 images of child pornography .

11/05/09 – Thomas Bavedas Still Not Competent

Thomas Bavedas is reportedly still unable to assist in his defense, therefore the case in Milford Superior Courtwas continued until February 4th at which time Bavedas may be sentenced if found competent.

Bavedas still faces nine counts of voyeurism and risk of injury to a minor in Bridgeport Superior Court where he was also found not competent to stand trial.

12/14/09 – Thomas Bavedas Dies

Reportedly, Thomas Bavedas has died.

Bavedas, who suffered a stroke last January and was in a coma for two months, died Saturday at the Whiting Forensic Unit of Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown where he has been held since being found mentally incompetent to stand trial.
