Posted by: Webmaster in Connecticut, FE-MV, High Schools, Substitute TeachersTara Johnson, 22, of Milford, Connecticut, a former substitute teacher at Jonathan Law High School in Milford was arrested Friday on a charge of second-degree sexual assault after an alleged sexual encounter with an 18-year-old high school student in a United Way parking lot in June of last year.
Upon learning of a warrant for her arrest Johnson turned herself in to the Milford Police department Friday morning and after processing was released on $10,000-bond.
The student was 18 when the incident took place, but state law makes it a felony for anyone in a position of power, including a teacher, to have a sexual relationship with someone under their charge.
The school district said Johnson was hired as a substitute in January of 2006 and taught about 35 days that year and another nine days at the beginning of the 2006-07 school year.
Johnson is scheduled to return to court June 12.
Update: 06/13/07
Yesterday, Johnson appeared in court and entered a not guilty plea.
An arrest warrant affidavit which was released Tuesday provides an interesting glimpse into the evidence in this case. That affidavit indicates that Johnson and the 18-year-old boy carried on extensive communications according to phone records. Both the boy initially and Johnson have maintained they hardly knew each other.
