Steven Sanger, 40, a science teacher at Byron Center High School, in Byron Center, Michigan, has been charged with one count of capturing an image of undergarments that were being worn.

The alleged victim is a 15-year-old female student that has told authorities that on June 12th that Sanger held a digital camera below her skirt as she stood next to his desk to review a test.
The girl reported the incident to school officials who called the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. Detectives obtained a warrant to search Sanger’s residence and computers. Following the investigation an arrest warrant was issued and Sanger turned himself in five days thereafter.
If convicted, Sanger faces up to five years in prison.
He is currently free on $5,000 bond.
08/10/08 - Guilty Verdict
A Kent County jury has found Steven Sanger guilty of attempting to photograph undergarments worn by another.
Sanger faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, however sentencing guidelines suggest that Sanger who has no previous criminal record would face a maximum of 6 months in the county jail.
Sentencing is set for September 30th.
10/08/08 - Sentencing
On Tuesday, Steven Sanger was sentenced to 180 days in the Kent County Jail.
Sanger also received 30 months of probation.

It’s a felony to photograph a person’s undergarments? That does seem unduly harsh, doesn’t it? But - it is important to note that this was a minor and the crime was being perpetrated by a person in authority and assumed trust. I can understand the traumatic feelings that this violation can cause a young girl.

The fact that tax payers would have to pay for this guy to be in jail for possibly 5 years for taking a picture up a girl’s skirt is absolutely ridiculous. I agree what he did was wrong, but it probably WAS in jest, although in incredibly poor taste. I think 60 days in prison or 2 years probation is more reasonable of a punishment.

Mr. Sanger was a teacher of mine, and he was wrongly accused of this crime. He is a good guy and his intentions were none but being funny and joking around
