Stephen Thomas Rooney, 39, an assistant principal at Markham Middle School in Los Angles, California arrested last week on allegations of sexually abusing a 13-year-old female student has pleaded not guilty.
Rooney was charged March 6 with three counts of a forcible lewd act upon a child and two counts of committing a lewd act upon a child. The alleged crimes are said to have occurred between January 1 and March 1 of this year. Two of the charges involve an incident that allegedly took place on the school campus in his office in front of another student.
Rooney’s attorney tried unsuccessfully to get his client’s $1 million bail reduced.
Rooney’s case has angered some Markham parents after they learned that Rooney had been previously investigated for allegedly having sex with an underage student at Fremont High School and pulling a gun on her stepfather. Although no criminal charges were filed in that case he was removed from that school and subsequently assigned to Markham Middle School.
04/28/08 – Additional Charges
Stephen Rooney has now been charged with molesting a second Markham Middle School, a 14-year-old female.
Prosecutors also say they have enough evidence to charge Rooney with the molestation of a 15-year-old girl who was a student at Foshay Learning Center.
05/01/08 – Rooney Ordered To Stand Trial
Yesterday Stephen Rooney was ordered to trial on three counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child, six counts of lewd acts upon a child and four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse in connection with three girls.
One of the girls, who is now 18, testified that she met Rooney around 2005, while she was a student at Foshay Learning Academy. The girl said that she was 15 and first had sex with him in October 2005 during a relationship that lasted about 1½ years and that she became pregnant with Rooney’s baby. The girl testified that she had a miscarriage and subsequently continued the sexual relationship with Rooney.
09/19/08 – Another Victim, Another Set of Charges
Steve Rooney, already facing charges of molesting three students, was arrested again Thursday on charges of molesting a fourth, according to authorities.
In the latest case, Rooney faces five felony charges that he molested a 14-year-old student at the Foshay Learning Center between June 2004 and June 2006.
The new charges will be handled as an entirely different case they Rooney's previous charges and will works its way through the courts after the first case.
Rooney currently free on bond is reportedly expected to be released on $100,000 bond in the newer case.
08/27/09 – No Contest Plea
Steve Rooney has reportedly pleaded no contest to three counts of lewd acts with a child and one count of unlawful sexual intercourse.
Rooney, who was taken into custody following the plea hearing, faces up to eight years in prison at sentencing on September 15th.
Rooney was initially charged with 13 felony counts involving three teenage girls.

Steve Rooney is a scumbag. He enlisted in the Marines, and couldn’t cut it. He received an “Other than Honorable” discharge. When he realized it would remain on his record he tried to go back to the Marine Corp, but they wouldn’t take him. So, he joined the Naval Reserve (the Navy will take just about anyone). This man never fought in a war. He grew up in a wealthy household, and Mommy & Daddy have always bailed him out. I hope the prison welcome wagon takes care of business. We had a pool going as to when he’d kill himself while out on bail(dang..we all lost). I read that he’s been labeled as a dangerous inmate due to his rule breaking, and fighting. His daddy told LA Times that Stevie had been beaten up in jail (boo-hoo).It’s my opinion that he’s trying to get thrown into isolation(not to worry…someone will get to him). Stephen was always a nobody. He is a lying piece of crap whom likes little girls because it makes him feel like a big man, and they wouldn’t question his BS lies simply because they didn’t know better. I believe his history of molestation began long before he got his credentials and became a teacher. So for those of you whom have felt the need to blame those poor girls, or to say Steve was a victim, you all need to do your research & not form opinions based on the lies Steve told you. I guarantee everything that came out of that man’s mouth was either bull, or Sh*t!!! By the way Stevie..I don’t think you’ll be getting Teriyaki Chicken in the pen.
could you be more specific about Rooney’s background? how long did you know him? did you teach with him? did you serve in the military with him?
We were related by marriage, and I personally believe that the molestations he was charged with could have been prevented had a certain individual reported what she knew.
Mr. Rooney was my PE teacher. He was a cool guy. I think what the media failed to mention is that he served in the army for 3 years on and off. I do know that a lot of soldiers suffer mentally. Maybe that affected his decison making skills. I just find it funny that the government is so willing to accept his military services, but crucify him once he messes up. Yea he did make a bad mistake though.
