Stephen Surette, 53, a former fifth and sixth-grade teacher at Forestdale School in Malden, Massachusetts has been sentenced for possessing and disseminating child pornography.
Surette, who is reportedly suffering from terminal colon cancer and liver failure, was sentenced to 60 days in a county house of correction, five years of probation and home confinement with a GPS bracelet.
In addition, Surette is required to register as a sex offender and get sex offender and alcohol treatment is prohibited from contact with any child under 18 except for his own children, is forbidden to use a computer or the Internet and is required to perform 20 hours a week of community service.
Surette came to the attention of authorities after the Department of Homeland Security became involved in an investigation into a German pornographer last November. Surette’s e-mail address had been recorded by the pornographer and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement tracked his identity down through the Internet service provider who turned the name over to Swampscott police.
After a seven day trial and two days of deliberation the jury found Surette guilty last week on eight counts of possessing child pornography and three counts of dissemination of child pornography.
