Shannon Lynn Best, 33, a social studies teacher at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, North Carolina has been arrested on allegations of taking indecent liberties with an 18-year-old female student.
Best was charged following an alleged weekend encounter between Best and the student at an undisclosed residence.
Best was arrested on Monday and was subsequently released from the Wake County Jail, presumably on bond.
Reportedly she also on Monday resigned from Sanderson High School where she has taught since August 2004.
04/17/08 - Additional Information
Documents released Thursday indicate that Best, had two female students spend the night at her apartment Friday.
It is further alleged that Best admitted to a month-long sexual relationship with one of the girls in which she engaged in kissing and fondling and that she sent a nude picture of herself to the student by cell phone.
06/18/08 - Guilty Plea To Reduced Charges
Shannon Best today pleaded guilty to reduced charges of misdemeanor attempted crime against nature and giving alcohol to a student.
As a result of her guilty plea Best was sentenced to 45 days in jail with that sentence reportedly suspended, 18 months of unsupervised probation and was fined $250 and court costs.
In addition to the sentence, if you could even call it a sentence, Best is prohibited contact with victim nor can she be around minors without supervision.
Shannon Best will not have to register as a sex offender.
Webmaster’s Editorial/Opinion:
Clearly this is yet another instance where one is left wondering “Why even bother?”.
Why did the state waste time, money and resources bringing this case to court if the prosecution was simply going to roll over, play dead and give the defendant a sweetheart deal that rather than serve as a deterrence to future crime instead serves as an encouragement to the further victimization of minors?

Unbelievable! Absolutely sickening! And she DOESN’T have to register as a sex offender??? She didn’t even get her hands slapped.

She broke the Law. She committed a crime. The law doesn’t allow students to ‘consent’ to sex with teachers, coaches, volunterrs,or school employees, no matter their age.
We are either a nation of laws or we aren’t.

this is for billy and brad…um dont talk bout my teacher like dat…she was my favorite teacher and imma be on her side no matta wat….she is not a bad person so yall need to leave her alone, let her be, and fall back and hit ur head…im gettin sick and tired of ppl making jokes at her and judging her…..keep on

Wow, she couldn’t find a 18 yr that was a student of hers. She’s pretty stupid for getting involved with a student.
