Shane Adrian Mast, 31, a former teacher at Cottage Grove High School, in Cottage Grove, Oregon and a former varsity boys basketball coach at North Douglas High School in Drain, Oregon has reportedly been arrested on allegations of the sexual abuse of female students.
Reportedly, Mast turned himself in to Cottage Grove police on a warrant for multiple counts of misdemeanor third degree sex abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of minors.
Mast’s arrest comes after a reported nine-month investigation by the Cottage Grove Police Department.
Investigators believe that Mast had inappropriate relationships with more than two female students under the age of 18 while teaching at Cottage Grove High.
Police also say that additional charges are pending.

10/07/09 – Case Update
Tuesday night, Shane Mast reportedly e-mailed a statement to KVAL News which said in part:
I ask for people to hold their opinions until all facts are presented in court. Rumors can snowball into sensational stories from unsensational truths!

10/08/09 – Court Appearance
Shane Mast made a court appearance this morning at which time he entered a plea of not guilty to misdemeanor charge that he had illegal sexual contact with a female student.
Mast now reportedly faces 15 counts of third-degree sexual abuse and 15 counts of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor for alleged encounters with Cottage Grove high schoolers in Douglas County.
On Thursday, Mast’s bail on the Cottage Grove charge was set at $30,000.
Mast is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on the Douglas County charges.
10/13/09 – Arraignment Delayed
The arraignment of Shane Mast, scheduled for Monday in Douglas County Circuit Court, was canceled.
Mast’s attorney, David Terry, said the hearing was cancelled because they filed a notice of representation..
Terry, went on to say, “Shane Mast is not guilty of any of this, and has experienced a tremendous amount of support from educators, community members and even law enforcement.”
A new arraignment date was not set on Monday.

I know Shane Mast! I went to High School with him. We were all pretty close. You know what I have known him for 19 years and he may have been a pain at times. He was there for anyone. Oh my freekin God he is married to the PRETTIEST WOMAN.. Who ever accused him of this is a moron and should be tried as well and put in jail. Shane is a great person but hey split from his wife would not ever put him to do this. I guess I am a little offended how people in Oregon from Lane County and Douglas county would say or do this. His parents raised him better than that. Does anyone not see a freekin game being played here or what? He is saying he is not guilty and most peers that know him are standing up. Those who have a grudge are going to talk smack because guess what they really did not know the true real Shane!! Grow up and open your eyes see what this is doing to his family and those around. Wake up and see that the persons accusing him are lying!!!

I know Shane Mast, as I was a former student of his. It’s a shame he did not listen to his morals when the choice arose, but every human make mistakes. It’s a shame that the media, and the Cottage Grove P.D. have made Shane look like such a bad person. Shane should not be seen solely as a sex offender, he was trying to do a lot of good for this world. He made several trips to Africa to help people in need, and has gathered thousands of dollars to help aid these people. While Mast may have made some mistakes, it saddens me to see a former teacher of mine get looked down upon so greatly by others. Shane is a good man, but he just got caught up in some problems with his personal life, and chose to make some poor decisions.
Look.. 17 might still be a minor.. according to the law.. wich is rediculous. but he could have found women his own age.. he did marry the prom queen.. and there are plenty of women his age that would be with him… it just so happened that someone younger than 18 made it easy. and willingly wooed him into this situation.. so i mean.. really.. If you were handing a one hundred dollar bill, you would probably take it, instead of having to work for it. most people would anyways.
if he did it, how come he couldn’t have found someone his age, not his kids age. He married the prom queen! WTF – Why do I know too many people from this town who are kinda cool with messin with people not in there age group? 17 to 15 seem like such a gray area to people its disgusting!
Third degree sex assault is:
(1) A person commits the crime of sexual abuse in the third degree if the person subjects another person to sexual contact and:
(a) The victim does not consent to the sexual contact; or
(b) The victim is incapable of consent by reason of being under 18 years of age.
(2) Sexual abuse in the third degree is a Class A misdemeanor.
like i said. this guy is being victimized by a 17 year old, or her parents, or maybe even just the cop! The girl doesn’t have to even want him to get in trouble.
But most of the time when this happens its because of jealousy or revenge. If in fact this man was involved with someone that was 17 years old, while he was separated from his wife, then he probably got back together with her, and the girl thought maybe she had something, got pissed when she didn’t and victimized him by using the laws statutes against him.
On another note… every guy knows these laws exist,

I have heard it said that Shane Mast is a chip off the old block. I don’t beleive that, but I am not close eonogh to the family to know for sure. I do know that he and his brother, James, were basketball palyers at Yoncalla High many years ago, and that they both commanded the floor very well, and played wtih integrity, as coach Ducnan always insisted on. But since graduation, they have slowly beocme different persons, and it looks like Shane, at least, has some immoral tendencies.
Too bad for the Dad and mother ( (Names deleted by site moderator), they do not deserve to have this happen to them. Shane should hang his head in shame. (no pun intended).

The police should be able to get the texts off the phone even if ther were erased. They have the devices now. The whole situation is sad. The Mast family is a wonderful family. Its too bad his parents and brother and sisters family have to endure this. It amazes me that Cottage Grove is finally putting a stop to this! After years of teachers doing this act then being promoted and having there next generation move into the school system…usually the apples don’t fall to far from the tree. Let alone the Cottage Grove police department. I personally know one (now disabled) officer who had slept with at least three high school students! There unfortunately should be an age requirement to any teacher working with high school aged girls or boys. Yes, some teachers keep moral in tact. But some give into temptation to easy. At least if they are old they wouldn’t be as apealing!
