Convicted sex offender Scott R. Coffing, 33, a former social studies teacher and girls’ junior varsity team coach at DeKalb High School, in Waterloo, Indiana has been arrested after being found with his victim in violation of the terms of his probation on his prior conviction.

Coffing is now charged with misdemeanor invasion of privacy after police found him Saturday night in Pleasant Lake with the girl, who is now 17. Following his arrest Coffing was being held in the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

In March, Coffing pleaded guilty to felony child seduction, which under Indiana law occurs when a person at least 18 years old and in a supervisory role has sex with or engages in sexual acts with a child who is at least 16 but younger than 18. Coffing admitted engaging in sexual acts with a then-16-year-old student between April 13 and June 1, 2006.

In conjunction with Coffing’s guilty plea to child seduction he was sentenced to two years in jail, with one year of that sentence suspended. Coffing was allowed to serve the first half of the sentence on work release and the second through community corrections and was ordered to serve one year of probation and have no contact with the girl until his probation expires. By that time the girl would have turned 18.

At his sentencing in March Coffing said his 16-year-old victim was, “quite simply the most amazing person I’ve ever met. I’m not ashamed to say that I love her. I always will, and I feel lucky to have had her in my life.”

08/05/09 – Sentencing in DeKalb County

DeKalb Superior Court I Judge Kevin Wallace has reportedly sentenced Scott Coffing to a term of three years in the DeKalb County Jail for disseminating matter harmful to minors.

Coffing pled guilty to the charge on July 1st.

The judge ordered Coffing’s DeKalb County sentence to run consecutively with a jail sentence in Steuben County.
