(09/26/08 – Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report)
Sandra Binkley, 36, a math teacher at Portland High School in Portland, Tennessee has been arrested and charged with statutory rape by an authority figure for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old male student.

It is alleged that Binkley had sex with the boy during March of this year during school hours and when other students were in the building.
Brinkley came to the attention of authorities when the boy reportedly told his parents earlier this week and they in turn contacted school administrators.
The father of the boy has been quoted in news media reports as saying, “He said she was okay, she was real nice. He said she was real friendly.”
Binkley reportedly turned herself in to police on Thursday and was subsequently released from the Sumner County jail on $5,000 bond.
Binkley who has reportedly taught at the school for 10 years has been placed on administrative leave without pay by the school system.
10/01/08 – More Alleged Victims Come Forward
Two more students have come forward claiming they’ve had a sexual encounter with Sandra Binkley.
The new allegations allege sexual acts between Binkley and the students both on and off campus.
As a result of the new allegations, Binkley surrendered to police today on new charges including two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and one count of sexual battery by an authority figure.
12/04/08 – Preliminary Hearing
On Wednesday, at the preliminary hearing for Sandra Binkley, three boys testified about alleged sexual encounters between themselves and Binkley in a locker room office, a classroom closet and her car and home.
Binkley’s attorney claimed that one of the teens had raped Binkley in the office and the other two are lying to protect her attacker.
Two of the alleged victims are currently students at Portland High School, and one graduated at the end of the last school year.
The judge found probable cause to send the case to a grand jury.
01/12/09 – Grand Jury Indictment
A Sumner County grand jury last week indicted Sandra Binkley on nine counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and three counts of sexual battery by an authority figure.
Binkley’s arraignment on the charges is set for January 23.
04/23/09 – Binkley Wants Job Back While Awaiting Trial
Sandra Binkley, who has been on administrative leave without pay since September, is asking the Board of Eduction for her job back while awaiting trail on allegations of having sex with three male students in 2007 and 2008.
School board Attorney Jim Fuqua advised Binkley’s attorney that only Director of School Benny Bills has authority over personnel matters and that the school board cannot vote on whether to reinstate Binkley.
05/13/09 – Sandra Binkley Says She Is The Victim
In an interview, Sandra Binkley has said, “There was one incident with one student, who was a month away from being 18. He was bigger than me and he forced himself on me. He came into the room and forced himself upon me.”
09/21/09 – Trial Underway
A jury was seated today in the trial of Sandra Binkley, accused of having sex with three of her male students.
Opening statements were set to begin Monday afternoon.
Earlier this year, Binkley in a television interview said she was raped by one of the students.
09/22/09 – Alleged Victim Testifies
A former Portland High School student testified Monday that the relationship he shared with teacher Sandy Binkley included sex, gifts and shared confidences and is “cherishable even to this day.”
09/29/09 – Sandra Brinkley Found Guilty
The jury has found Sandra Binkley guilty on two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure.
The jury acquitted Binkley on seven counts involving two other boys, one of whom was the younger brother of the victim she was convicted of having sex with.
Reportedly, Binkley faces a sentence of three to six years in prison, which she would serve at 30 percent because she does not have any prior convictions.
Sentencing is set for November 13th.
10/16/09 – Robertson County Charge Tossed
A Robertson County judge has thrown out the charge against Sandy Binkley based on the possibility that the alleged victim might have been 18 if and when the sex took place at her home.
Binkely still faces sentencing next month in the Sumner County case.
11/13/09 – Sentencing
Sandra Binkley has reportedly been sentenced to 12 years in prison, the maximum sentence that Judge Dee Gay could impose.
Binkley’s lawyer David Ridings said it was the most egregious abuse of justice in a sentence that he has ever seen and indicated an appeal would be filed.
According to NewsChannel5.com:
She will serve two, six year sentences consecutively at 30 percent served.

Portland, Im sorry, but Yes… maybe the “victim” is not such a victim, BUT she was a MARRIED authority figure in a school, with 3 children. Even though this boy may have wanted it, so did she. And you are crying poor poor children and husband, but the fact of the matter is, she shouldn’t have had her slutty hands on ANY child attending that school. No matter what their age was. I know her personally, outside of school. The woman had issues with faithfulness. And it just happened to burn her in this case. And had she not went into the courtroom and lied her a** off… she wouldn’t have received near the sentence she did. She walked into that courtroom day in and day out, smirking… not a care in the world. She just knew her lies were big enough to get her off. No emotion whatsoever was shown from her until the day of conviction. She also lied about her father beating her mother… I happen to know him very well too! Anything she could do to excuse what was really at hand. Bottom line, she did it, then she lied about it… now she is paying for it. Those boys were wrong too… but she was the “mature adult” and should have chalked it all up to crushes, and walked away. Wonder if she was thinking about her poor 3 children and husband when they were in that closet together? I can clearly tell Portland, that either you are a VERY immature person, or just one of those, that always goes for the underdog. Wake up… she was WRONG!
HO HO HO. Pigslutadultress Sandy Binkley goes DOWN DOWN DOWN. All of her stupid lies did no good in a courtroom. Perhaps now her idiot husband will get a clue about his “wife”.
i went to school with all of the “boys” she slept with. i was there at school when it was happening. I can tell all of you…she wanted it. she knew what she was doing. she did not think she was going to get caught. she has slept with more than what was told, i can asure you of this.
OK so where is the link from Inside Edition?????? There is his little payday and yes, he sure is traumatized by the whole event. PITIFUL….
That slapping sound was Judge Gay slapping the taste out of Binkley’s mouth. Someone pull him off her!
It’s not the crime, but the cover-up that did her in.
Actually Portland, I think she’ll end up serving four years. It’s my understanding that, as a first time offender, she’ll end up serving 1/3 of her 12 year sentence. I think four years for a person that broke a pretty serious law, denied it, claimed she was raped, did media appearances, and acted like she would do anything to avoid the consequences of her actions is pretty appropriate. Especially if part of the effect is to make other teachers stop and consider whether or not they think the risk is worth it. I think that’s a pretty decent use of tax payer dollars. And I think you’ll have a hard time arguing for lighter teacher/student sex sentences; good luck with that.
Well JUSTSAYNO if you would like to get technical, she will serve 30% of her 12 year sentence. Of course that is outside of the fact that her sentence will be appealed and it will be won. She will be up for parole and she will get it… but you figure the math if the systems fails again she will serve 3.8 years. And tell me since when did Sandy Binkley become the poster child for “other teachers” This is exactly my point. She was made an example of, pitiful.. Now had the victim been just that, a victim, it would be a different story. He was 3 weeks away from being legal, if he would have chosen to murder someone that afternoon instead of sleep with his teacher, he would have been considered an adult.
PHS GRAD.. you obvisously were not there, or you would remember that the discussion of alcohol was brought up by the other “alleged victims” and your comment about an innocent adolescent is the best yet.. How did this sex act hurt the 17 year old boy? It did not . I would say that Ms. Binkley has lost a lot more than the little boy ever thought about. She has lost everything and this 17 year old jerk gets to continue to beat his GFs and talk to Inside Edition.. the truth will come out.
Truly, you have no idea what you’re talking about. The truth isn’t out… if it was then she would have been guilty on a lot more charges than she already is. Ah, to be ignorant…
And by the way, only the victim she was found guilty of having sex with took the stand. The others were not victims. You’ve gotta get your facts straight, bud.
My facts are very straight, it seems that yours are the ones a bit clouded. If you were “there” as you have claimed then you would know the things I write about. Ignorant? Well Maybe, but I know the facts of this case, I know who testified and who did not and I know who the victims are in this whole mess. It is not You PHSgrad nor is it Ms. Binkley. The true victims of this are her 3 children that now have no mother. This whole deal would have been different had it been abuse or rape it was neither. It was a teenage twirp who wanted sex from his teacher got it then cried about it and suddenly has become a victim.. give me a break. Perhaps they could talk about some real issues in his anger management class, that would be a great start; however, now that this little twirp has some sympathy he will use it to the fullest of how he was a victim, how he is now embarassed. He should be embarassed and he should be ashamed of himself. 3 weeks away from 18 and he has destroyed one family, there will be more in his wake and in the end, he will get what he deserves.
Portland, spare me the math lesson. 3.8 versus 4: BFD.
Unlike you, I don’t have a crystal ball. I’m sure it’s a fact that she’ll appeal and drive her family further into a financial hole in an effort to save her sorry ass. I’m not so sure that she’ll win on appeal or that she’ll necessarily get out at her first parole hearing, but whatever. For now, she’s where she belongs.
You seem to have an issue with examples. I think examples are good. And I don’t believe the sentence was egregious at all. She won’t, for example, be buried up to her neck and stoned to death for her actions.
Ultimately, in an effort to take no responsibility for her actions, Binkley gambled and came up snake eyes. And, as far as I can tell, she lied to absolutely everyone: her colleagues, her friends, her husband, her children, her family, the media, and significantly a court. Big lies. Repeatedly. You seem to think that’s okay, or at a minimum no big deal.
You also seem to prefer to focus on the kid as if his role is, somehow, relevant. Even when you know it’s not. I’d agree that his role would have been relevant if he actually did forcibly rape her, but I don’t think anyone takes that assertion seriously.
You can bring up the ‘what if it were murder’ argument all you want, or tell us he was nearly 18 over and over and over, but it isn’t going to make a bit of difference. We don’t want the Binkleys’ of the world using our schools for their own personal sexual gratification. And we’re not inclined to reward someone that lies that prolifically. Frankly, Binkley is despicable. And _her_ actions–not the kid(s) that obliged her wants by banging her–have caused her separation from her children. She’s taken from her kids enormously. Why? Because she enjoyed the illicit thrill of bopping her students. You can defend her all you want. Obviously I can’t stop you. But you’re defending an absolutely despicable human being who is an ‘example’ of everything a good person should not be. Which really makes me wonder about you as well. Of course, I know you don’t like examples so I’m pretty sure the lesson is lost on you.
Oh well.
This sentence is way out of hand. Did she deserve punishment, certainly. But more time that murders? More time than those persons convicted of vehicular homicide? I dont think so. The judge was way out of line proclaiming who he felt was a saint and who was not. And why were the other alledged victims allowed to testify? IF she was acquitted from charges with those kids, then why were they allowed to speak at sentencing? Our justice system is so screwed up and we all need to vote for change in our community. Our leaders prosecute to the fulliest these little crimes that really do not matter. She was not abusing anyone .. this boy was 3 weeks away from being legal… Take her teaching certificate, make her register as sex offender, put her on probation but 12 years… OUTRAGE to spend our tax dollars this way.
None of the victims besides the one she accused of raping was on the stand during sentencing, Portland. Trust me, I was there
.
I know some people are upset over the harsh sentence, but you must consider that she would have gotten a lot less punishment had she accepted the plea bargain. She knew what she did was wrong, but she instead chose to try to hide it and cheat the justice system. Why is nobody outraged about this? The judge gave her the harsh sentence not only because of the crime she committed, but the fact that she tried to cover it up and accuse an innocent adolescent of rape. Rape is a serious crime, and to lie about it like that… she deserved a harsh sentence, and she got one.
I totally agree with you. Accuse the of rape…
Sorry, actually Nef got 3 to life if I recall correctly. Same diff.
Unlike Nef who eventually came forward and got five years, this bitch acted as if she was above the law. A twelve year time out is rough, but certainly what she deserved.
i think she will serve probably 3 to 5 years at most with some years of hard case probation afterward…there are just too many suppose lies and strange going onz by her to reconsider…i bet she wish she would have cop’d a plea now
Multiple students in just 1 year + admision at first + TV shows crying rape blaming the students + fight a trial + incredible lies on stand = 12 years prison.
Guilty plea to lesser charges = months jail.
The appeal will put things better and will serve 2 years maximum.
Several “victims” in just 1 year + admision at first + TV shows crying rape + fight a trial + lies on stand = 12 years prison.
A guilty plea = months jail.
The appeal will put things better and will serve 2 years maximum.
Who is the judge to say:
“I see that she does not embrace the truth, I feel Binkley’s husband, Doug, was a saint who stood by her side through thick and thin”.
“He is one of the people I feel most sorry for in this case because he believed you”.
Wow! Americans!
She will appeal the sentencing, sure.
