Richard Young, 68, a debate teacher and coach at Buhler High School in Buhler, Kansas has been arrested and charged with three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and one count of indecent solicitation of a child.
It is alleged that Young had a sexual relationship with a foreign-exchange student in August 2007.
Bond for Young was set at $75,000 and he has an initial court appearance set for tomorrow.
Young who has been suspended with pay since November is the second Buhler High School employee charged with having a sexual relationship with a student this school year. Anthony Coker is the other.
05/01/08 – Charges Upgraded, Preliminary Hearing Set
Prosecutors upgraded the charges to three counts of aggravated indecent liberties, instead of the lesser indecent liberties with a child.
A preliminary hearing is set for June 4th at the request of prosecutors who want to get the testimony of alleged victim on record in case the victim returns to Korea before trial.
06/05/08 – Preliminary Hearing
A preliminary hearing was held for Richard Young and the prosecution presented evidence Richard Young has a history of making sexual advances toward exchange students.
A law enforcement computer expert testified he found 44 websites for gay Asian teenage pornography on Young’s computer that predates August 1st, 2007, the day the accuser arrived in the United States.
Following the preliminary hearing Young was bound over for trial.
His arraignment is set for July 7th.
07/18/08 – Court Hearing
Richard Young appeared for a hearing today and entered a plea of not guilty and requested a jury trial.
A trial date has not been set.
10/17/08 – Guilty Verdict
A Reno County jury has found Richard Young guilty on two counts of taking indecent liberties, one count of aggravated indecent liberties and one count of solicitation of a child.
The jury announced that they believe the judge should be allowed to sentence Young to more prison time than he normally would be allowed to do.
02/09/09 – Sentencing
Richard Young has been sentenced to to more than 13 ½ years in prison today.
Young, who had been free on $75,000 bond, was led away from the courtroom in handcuffs after the judge denied pleas for leniency in the case from Young’s attorney and supporters.

Richard Young was not the best teacher, nor even a good teacher. Even before these allegations and eventual convictions, RY had a history of playing favourites amongst his debaters. Focusing on only the most promising and leaving the others to struggle. Lying to students and parents about inter-squad politics was the SOP. He might have been a successful coach, but he wasn’t a good person or educator.
Well Well Well – here we go AGAIN. Another long line of perverts staunchly defended by the old “He was the best teacher, therefore he must be innocent” line of BULL.
Guilty and sent to prison. Keep standing by his innocence…keep proclaiming how wonderful a guy he is! All the while he’ll be rotting in prison. And Why? Because he is a filthy pervert.
Here’s the news, folks: It doesn’t matter if he was a great teacher or not. It doesn’t matter if he was a great father or not. What makes you think that appearing to be a decent human being and a child molester are mutually exclusive? They are not.

I was a freshman at Buhler High this year. He was my debate coach for most of the season, and he was the best teacher I ever had. I got more from that class than any other I took this year.
The foreign exchange student had a need for attention, anyone that hung out with him could tell you that.
People that run this site should realize that our court system runs: INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY, and should not post things condemning someone until prosecutors remove all reasonable doubt in a courtroom.
its ridiculous ms newton that they even have a website about all this nonsens. some good people have their lifes ruined,all because of this. and some cant wait to slander people they dont even know.
Innocent until proven guilty. It is ridiculous that you have Mr. Young placed on a website with other people who sexually assault young children. I, and others, stand by his innocence.
