Richard Berkley, 42, a former teacher at Dexter High School in Dexter, Kansas has been arrested and charged for engaging in inappropriate sexual relations with a female student.
According to NewsCow.net:
The formal criminal complaint – obtained by NewsCow – alleges that between Jan. 1, 2007 and May 9, 2008, Berkley engaged in lewd fondling or touching with the girl, who would have been 16 or 17 at the time. She is identified on the document by her initials and a birth date of February 7, 1991 is listed for her.
Reportedly Berkley was released on bond immediately following his arrest earlier this month.
According to NewsCow.net, Berkley resigned from the school system in April after having been initially suspended by the school system.
05/12/09 – No Contest Plea
Richard Berkley has reportedly entered a no contest plea to charges of unlawful sexual relations.
Berkley’s sentencing hearing is set for June 29.
Berkley remains free on bond while awaiting formal sentencing.
07/01/09 – Sentencing
Richard Berkley has been sentenced to 30 days in jail to be followed with 12 months probation.
If Berkley violates the terms of his probation he will be ordered to serve seven months with the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The whole town did nothing because they never caught them in the act or im sure someone would have. If guesses and rumors were the basis for putting people away alot of innocent people would be put away. Sure people wondered and many teachers talked to him and told him he needed to back off but you can’t go around accusing people of stuff like this even if it is true… even if someone is innocent a accusation like that can still ruin a teachers reputation… And that is something that cannot be repaired very easily…

EVEN TEACHER KNEW ABOUT IT AND DID NOT DO ANYTHING . I THINK ALL TEACHER ARE AS GUILTY AS HE. DID NOT ALL KNEW AND WHAT DID THEY DO . SO MUCH FOR THE SMALL TOWN AND BEST EDU . WHY NOT THEY CAME FARWARD. EVEYONE SHOULD ASK THEM WHY DID NOT IT REPORTED SOON.

Yeah well I was also a student of Berkley’s. And I noticed his actions toward his female students and I didn’t like it. The girl he was caught with wasn’t the first one he treated like this. And he is supposed to be professional in his workplace. If he had done this to another teacher it would still be a crime but the fact that it was a student is wrong and disgusting. Now i wouldnt wish the sentence for this crime on anyone but justice needs to be found and if he was truely guilty then he deserves everything the law can do to him. And as to him being a good teacher, you are obviously a girl because he is one of the most sexist teachers I have ever had and I definitely didn’t like him as a teacher. But its obvious now why he always treated the girls better.
I blame both of the people involved….they both knew better…he just should have know better more. He has kids…how would you explain that to your kids.. i hope he gets what he has coming to him. im on the girls parents side. but she should suffer also…damn he is 40…thats nasty and he is hairy…she needs to know she is just a mid life flig he is having…haha
What makes you think this is this girl is the only one? He’s had several suggle buddys in the past and was working on a couple of new ones too. Other high school girls spent the night at his house too not just this one. A jr high girl too. And what aoubt all the jr high boys he always had spend the night at his house. He’s sick and disgusting.
He was not a good teacher. He was pig from day one. Never made a mistake according to him. I can’t wait to see his pic on the sex offender page.
This girl was hired by this teacher to babysit his children and not to “spend the night.” He may have been a good teacher but was also evidently worthless as a human being. This teacher has no place being around children, probably even his own. He ruined his own career by messing around with a student and not ruined by the girl and certainly not the girls’ parents. He knew to tell the girl, “enough already,” but didn’t. The parents probably prevented others from going through the same thing. Who knows who else might be out there who isn’t speaking or who would have eventually been caught in this situation.
The girl should indeed have known better, but this guy is 40 + years old for gosh sakes and knew very well what he was doing was wrong unlike a young lady who may have been taken in by a wiser individual. The sheriff said in the article on newscow that the more people they talked to the more they found out. I’m guessing these charges would not have been filed if he didn’t do anything improper. If you also look at the web site cited here (newscow), they mentioned in one article that he resigned following his paid suspension. Why would an innocent person voluntarily resign? Every one is innocent until proven guilty, but he resigned before being found guilty by a court. What does that tell you?
This girls parents need to also be accountable for their actions. This girl spend the night at this former teachers home numerous times and her parents were aware of it. This has been going on longer then 2007. I have children that goes to this same school and I have noticed this girl’s behaviour at school functions. Even family members that would come for different school functions would notice her behavoir toward him, So it should of be dealed with long ago. It is too bad that this will ruin his career. He was a good teacher.
Wow! I cannot believe that people are acutally blaming the student! WHO CARES is she threw herself at him? He is the adult! What if it were your daughter/niece whom this happened to? Did you ever have a crush on a teacher in shcool? How do you know what you have done if you had fallen in love with him/her??? We all had “hot” teachers, and I bet we would have let things go too far, being so young and inexperienced as the student is. She is innocent, she is NOT THE ONE ON TRIAL HERE!
People, yes, she may have been throwing herself at him, but he is the adult, not her. He knew what he was doing and knew better! He was warned numerous times to back away from her by his friends. We all knew he would get busted, and we all knew it would come to this. Yes, she should have not allowed it to happen but she is the innocent one here. Justice will prevail.
I’m so happy that more of you realize that a lot of these students are not victims, just loose girls looking for man sex. She’ll do it again, but maybe next time it’ll be with one of her friends’ fathers or maybe her uncle, or both.
I was a student of Richard Berkley. He was a great teacher. The girl he was messing around with wasnt a victim like so many make it out to be. She is my age and if you ask me she is also old enough to know better. Yes, what he did was wrong but she was not a victim she was always throwing herself at him. Its sad that now his career is ruined and he is the only one being held responsible. It takes two.
