Richard Ali

Richard Ali, 27, a former biology teacher at Cathedral High School in Manhattan was indicted Monday by a grand jury on charges of raping three underage students and sexually molesting two others.

Ali, who was originally arrested in March and April 2007 and held on a total of $540,000 bail, was arraigned before Queens Supreme Court Justice James Griffin on a 25-count indictment charging him with one count of second-degree rape, six counts of third-degree rape, one count of second-degree criminal sexual act, five counts of third-degree criminal sexual act, seven counts of third-degree sexual abuse and five counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Judge Griffin increased Ali’s bail to $750,000 and ordered him to return to court on November 15, 2007.

Assistant District Attorney Donna Marie Golia said at Ali’s indictment hearing that has tried to thwart a police investigation into his after-school antics by calling his victims directly and “begging the girls not to say anything because it would get him in trouble and having students harass his accusers.

Ali faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

1/11/08 – Guilty Plea

Prosecutors have announced that Richard Ali has pleaded guilty to one charge of second-degree rape, two charges of third-degree rape and two charges of third-degree sexual abuse of five students at Cathedral High School.

Sentencing is set for January 25th and Ali faces from 18 to 54 months in prison.

2/01/08 – Sentencing

Richard Ali has been sentenced to from 1 and 1/2 to 4 and 1/2 years in prison for sexually assaulting five of his students.
