The Long Beach Press-Telegram is reporting that Raul Olivas, 41, a math teacher and the head boys basketball coach at Millikan High School in Long Beach, California was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of secretly videotaping his 16-year-old stepdaughter.
Reportedly, the girl was searching for something when she came across the camera trained on a part of the room where she typically dressed. On it were images of her in states of undress
The Long Beach Police Department acknowledge that officers arrested a 41-year-old Long Beach man at his Eastside home Saturday on a charge of “secretly videotaping a juvenile member of his family for sexual gratification.” but police refused to release the suspect’s name.
Reportedly, the Long Beach School District has placed Olivas on administrative leave.
According to the Los Angles County Sheriff’s Office, Olivas was arrested by Long Beach Police on Saturday, booked on the misdemeanor charge and released on bond, which was listed at $25,000.
Olivas’ arraignment is scheduled for September 27th.
07/12/08 – Not Guilty Verdict
Raul Olivas was acquitted in a jury trial on June 24th.
News media reports indicate that Olivas and a forensic psychologist who testified in his defense, along with Olivas’s wife and his stepdaughter, the alleged victim, all testified that Olivas was suffering from alcoholism, gambling addiction and depression and that he planted the camera in an obvious place as an act of self-destruction and not for sexual gratification.
The alleged victim indicated that she did not want to be there (in court) and that she still loved her stepfather and wanted her family to remain intact and when questioned indicated that she wanted the charges dropped.
Prosecutor Tom Reeves said that his office made no notice of the trial at the request of the victim and her family. Olivas and his wife, who both insisted there was no request to keep an acquittal under wraps.

This is just unbelievable – GUILTY – i really don’t care if he cant hold his alcohol or whatever other ‘addiction’ he claims to be suffering from. My heart goes out to his Step Daughter i hope you can come back from this and watch your back he’s done it once and got away with it, he could do it again and get away with it.
as a former basketball player of raul’s, his condesending tone and nature would never allow one to believe he was ever capable of anything so horendous. i reluctantly hold in a grin as the man who conditioned his players to believe they were not capable of nothing more than becoming a high school drop-out. however, i have not lost sight of the person he has hurt and wish her all the best. i am praying for her and her family and hope she may one day be able to move on from this tragedy. but please, lets not feed the public, and those whom know how much of a jerk RAUL OLIVAS really is and put him in jail where he belongs. i am a parent of a young daughter now, and men like him shouldnt hide behind “excuses.”

I believe the prosecutor got it right.Mrs.Olivas sold her daughter out for her own personnel gain.In the process she has put every other child this man comes in contact with in danger.How sad that this child has no one looking out for her.
Where is the proof on the claim that he was found not guilty? Not guilty means there was an actual trial with a jury. Somebody must be able to get court docs on this case if the news media is ignoring the facts if this is the truth. More info needed.

This girl is actually one of my best friends. It was terrible seeing her, right at the beginning of school, absolutely crushed, cutting herself off from most of the people she knew. I felt bad, because she is probably the prettiest girl i’ve ever seen (seriously), and she lost a whole lot of self confidence for many months. Now she’s more or less the same person as she was a year ago — outwardly, at least. Anyway, i just wanted to share that with you.

Any follow-up on the “alledged” secretly video-taping stepdaughter coach story?
This case is still so early in the stages of investigation it was irresponsible reporting on the part of Tracy Manzer; not to mention the cruelty of releasing the identity of the alleged victim in this case who now has to school, the grocery store, the bank, etc. and listen to everyone speculating, laughing, and gossiping about her family. The police, the school, the school district all tried to protect her. The press telegram is nothing but tabloid news.
