Thank you concerned! This is one of the most intelligent things that have been said.
Any even though the previous person worked with Tye and believed nothing inappropriate was going on they clearly did not have enough contact with the man. I too worked with the man and myself and many others knew the relationship he was having with students was completely inappropriate.
Those of us who believed something was innately wrong had our concerns brushed to the side because the students completely believed in him and refused to “tell” on him so to speak. He had them so convinced he was god-like that even the kids who were manipulated into taking the pictures are still defending him. It is entirely sick and reprehensible. And of course it absolutely undoes any good he did because there was ALWAYS an ulterior motive. Helping the students his way of manipulating them down the line.
Serial killers, rapists, dictators, etc all have their positive points. How else would they lure their victims? We would never defend the good parts of them, why are we defending the so called good points of Tye?
Of course he provided support and guidance to students in a friendly and sincere way. How else would the pervert get them to take their clothes off?
While what Mr. Tye did is definitely reprehensible, he did change many students lives for the better. I believe that it is entirely unfair to completely discredit all of his accomplishments because of one facet of his life.
I worked with Mr. Tye for 4 years, and through that time I never even had a hint that he was capable of this. He always appeared to act entirely appropriate with his students.
So while there is a lot of evidence against him, and he has been indicted, that does not entirely flaw him as a person. He deserves to go to jail for what he did, but we need to keep in mind that he helped MANY people. And that loyalty that so many of you are confused and shocked at, it’s due to the fact that he provided much needed guidance and support to many students, and did it in such a friendly and sincere way.
Goodness I didn’t know they let criminals have access to computers is jail, this defense sounds like it is straight out the mouth of the infamous Tye. Congrats to aspiring to sound just like a felon. You must be so proud of yourself.
Tye had one of the highest pass rates in the school on AP exams, his students regularly scored int eh passing range. The trip to japan was a sanctioned trip and open to any student who wished to attend. Originally there were several females signed up to go on the trip, but they dropped out when the price went up. Unsanctioned field trips, you must be talking about the college visits, and although these weren’t officially sanctioned he received written permission from the parents of the students he took on these trips. Stop talking out of your @$$ disgusted, and admit that you never knew tye well, because if you did you wouldn’t be saying these things.
I can’t believe the previous conversations have gotten this far.
To “innocent until proven guilty”:
Last year particularly the man was no where near 100% and the years before that he was barely reaching 50% when the national average was close to 70%. So do not give him false credit, missing 30-40 days a school year tends to hinder your performance in the classroom.
I am shocked that a staff member would say innocent until proven guilty. He has been indicted by a grand jury at the state level on 4 separate felony counts of indecencies with minors and exploitation of minors. He is now headed to the federal grand jury to be indicted on federal charges of selling child pornography. And if you are unaware of what a grand jury indictment means, it means there is an abundance of evidence to go forth with the trial. Meaning the case is rock solid and will most likely lead to to prison. The only debate is whether they allow him to serve the sentences concurrently or separately. Each charge carrying a 7-10 year sentence. And if he is indicted on the federal charges the debate will be whether he serves in federal or state prison.
Shocking that people are defending any part of this man’s life. Taking students on unsanctioned field trips and staying in the same rooms with them is inappropriate. Does it matter whether or not they were male or female? Defending him Just because he didn’t do it to you doesn’t mean that he was in any way wholesome or good. He was disgusting and took advantage of his students. That completely eradicates any good he did. Shame on you both!!! There are students who are crushed and torn apart by this whole thing and we are discussing whether or not the adult responsible for this pain was good? Whether or not he is guilty? They have the pictures and video! They have the testimonies of those involved. And they have a grand jury indictment.
I’ve known Mike Tye for over 6 years, both as a former student and a fellow employee. Although I was shocked by the allegations, I’m more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until his guilt has been definitively proven in the courtroom. As a Duke student, I haven’t forgotten the LAX case and how detrimental the rush to convict can be to a person’s life.
“Disgusted”, Tye’s students regularly performed well on the AP Psychology exam, and he had a near 100% pass rate on the IB Psychology exam before IB was foolishly discontinued at Independence.
I NEVER said it never happened.
I said it was unbelievable to people who knew him,
so don’t hmmm me.
Also, girls did go on those trips.
Manipulation is not the same as brainwashing.
I don’t see where you’re getting that.
As for all of the rest of the warning signs,
maybe you did try to tell people,
I wouldn’t know.
I tried, but no one would listen. Maybe its that whole brainwashing thing again, but according to you it never happened. Hhhhmmm! And if you have read the reports he has two previous complaints launched against him by parents. One of which caused him to be fired as the swim team coach for a period of time. He was not reinstated until a new principal came and did not know of the complaints.
He was an adult man who routinely took BOYS (never girls) on trips (Japan, college visits, dinner on Fridays) and stayed in the same hotel rooms with them. I would like to know how you explain typically intelligent, well rounded top of the class students participating in actions such as those. He was clearly manipulating them which is the same as brainwashing.
I know he was teaching by the books because I was in his class.
He was a little bit on the weird side, but not a creep.
Yes, he is getting what is coming to him, going to jail and all.
It’s not being brainwashed to defend him either.
When somethinglike this happens people who knew him just can not believe it, so they defend him. It’s normal.
If you knew him so well, how come you didn’t out him before?
Unfortunately, I knew him better than you can ever imagine. THe man has been indicted on 4 felony charges with minors/students and after the state is done with him the FBI will have their chance. There is a reason why people are both disgusted and creeped out. These inappropriate relationships have been going on for 5 years at the least.
And I would like to ask how you know he was teaching by the book? Because I know for a fact he wasn’t and his low AP test scores are living proof. He may have helped you, but count your blessings that it wasn’t you who was victimized and realize that your rant above defends a pedophile…I call that brainwashing.
Under no circumstances is it okay to defend someone who takes advantage of his students/minors.
Tye brainwashed no one, he taught exactly what was in the books, and he provided the students with the information they needed to pass their AP exams, who are you that you think that you can make these legations, you are no one. Tye was a good man, I’ll stand by that, but he made a very bad decision and deserves to go to jail. People are loyal to him not because he brainwashed them but because they liked him (Deleted by site moderator). And Tye is not a creep, to people who dont know him he always seemed strange, but I can tell you know that those close to him grew to love him, and understand him. I’m not going to sit by and let ignorant people discredit the man, who worked me out of a major depression, pushed me to work hard in school, and encouraged me to apply to college when i didn’t see why I should. This man essentially saved my life, and he definitely changed it for the better. So all you (Deleted by site moderator) who say you knew him, maybe you should rethink your position

This was a teacher who used his psychology class to manipulate and essentially brain wash students. He had a child psychology degree and used it to its fullest. It has been rumored that this scandal has been going on for three or more years. Many of those kids won’t testify against him because of their insane loyalty.
As of now the DA has a solid case and he isn’t going anywhere. The sentence coming will not be near as bad as the treatment he rightfully deserves in jail!!!
This guy is a CREEP CREEP CREEP..I have known him for 4 years..CREEEP
Tye is innocent
FREE TYE!
