Christopher Matthew Yates, 30, of Troutville, Virginia a music teacher and band director at Glenvar High School has been charged with taking indecent liberties with a female student.
Reportedly the victim lived with Yates and his wife in Botetourt County rather than Roanoke County, the location of the school.
The alleged offenses as said to have occurred between July 1st and October 4th of this year.
Reportedly Yates, who has worked for the school for five years, has been suspended from his duties.
Following his arrest Yates was held in the Botetourt County Jail on $12,000 bond with a hearing scheduled for January 22nd.
04/17/08 – Plea Deal
WDBJ Roanoke, Virginia is reporting that Christopher Matthew Yates has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors that will result in Yates pleading guilty to a felony in July.
As part of the plea deal Yates will be sentenced to three years, but will only serve six months after which he will be on probation and have to register as a sex offender.
07/25/08 – Guilty Plea
Christopher Matthew Yates pleaded guilty Thursday morning to a felony count of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
As a result of Yates plea he was sentenced to three years in prison with all but six months suspended, and five years probation after his release.
Although the original plea deal provided for only three years probation, the judge insisted on a five year probationary period and Yates agreed to accept the new probation term.
Yates who has been jailed awaiting the conclusion of his case has already served a significant portion of his six month prison term.

i use to go to the school were he worked and i met him once cause i was in theater and had to take the band stuff back to the band room… we didnt say anything to eachother but i reconize the picture… i cant belive this cause he seemed to be so nice…idk i hope that he is innocent but i dont think i will ever know cause i dont go to that school anymore

I’m not sure of the details on this case, it’s the first I’ve heard of it. I do know Matt Yates very well though, he was my first boyfriend in fact and I’ve never known him to be anything other than kind, gentle and understanding. There are two sides to every story and I sure would like to hear his.

Mr. Yates was my band director- and my favorite teacher. I do believe that mr. Yates had a lapse in judgement- if what he did is true. Mr. Yates will be remembered in the Glenvar band community as the man who brought us to the level we are at now for years to come. Please continue to give him, his wife, and their new son support through prayer and thoughts. Thank you.

I was an instructor at the time and the “student” who posted on 10/19 had various family problems and social problems at school and was over-dramatic about everything. She quit because she couldn’t handle it. Anyone who is reading this post needs to remember that teenagers are DRAMATIC! … and if they dont get what they want they will say ANYTHING to make themselves look good.

I was a student of his and was a favorite(which was really creepy) untill I got really sick. I was on the colorguard and in band. One year after pre-show preformance for the Homecoming game I was taken to the ER by ambulance due to a sever asthma attack caused by my sickness. He forced me to march and the end result was a trip to the ER. After I was allowed back to march he made it hell for me. He ruined colorguard and band for me which was something that was my life for six years. This didn’t surprise me at all, I just don’t beleive justice was given to all who was harmed by this sick and disguating man…

Yates got six months, and five years probation.
Video shows him cheerfully admitting his wrong and smiling as he apologizes to the Glenvar community. Amazing what a nice, Christian attitude he’s keeping. Guess he knows he’s “forgiven” by the man upstairs, lol!
