(12/04/07 - Initial BBT Report)

Leonardo “Leo” Brenes, 42, a teacher at Colonial Heights Middle School in Colonial Heights, Virginia has been arrested on charges stemming from an alleged sexual encounter with an underage girl.

The alleged victim is not a student of Brenes or a student at the middle school but rather a student at Colonial Heights High School and police say that the sexual activity did not take place at either school.

Brenes who is reportedly charged with a crime against nature for performing oral sex on a juvenile and consensual carnal knowledge with a juvenile over the age of 15 was held in the Riverside Regional Jail on $2,000 bond.

Reportedly Brenes was released on bond and has been placed on unpaid administrative leave by the school system.

05/28/08 - Trials Set In Two Jurisdictions

Leonardo Brenes is scheduled for two trials next month.

On June 5th Brenes will stand trial in Prince George where he is charged with felony counts of indecent liberties with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

On June 26th Brenes is set for trial in Colonial Heights where he faces felony charges of attempted carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent liberties with a minor.

A conviction on either set of charges may result in Brenes deportation back to Costa Rica after serving his prison sentence.

All of the counts with which Brenes is charged allege the same victim.

07/21/08 - Guilty Verdict

Leonardo Brenes has been found guilty on charges of attempted carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent liberties with a minor.

He faces a maximum sentence of up to 5 years in prison on each count at sentencing on October 5th.

Brenes, a Costa Rican immigrant, also faces possible deportation after serving his time.

Brenes still faces trial on September 4th in Prince George County on charges of indecent liberties with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

    While this is a horrible situation and what Brenes did was wrong, all of the publicity that the press and news are giving to this situation is not needed and only makes matters worse.
