Kent Whitman, 53, the former cross country coach at Genoa High School, in Genoa, Ohio has entered a guilty plea to three misdemeanor counts of sexual imposition against a 15-year-old girl, a member of the running team.
As part of Whitman’s plea deal the prosecutor’s office will dismiss three counts of sexual imposition and one count of assault, all of which are misdemeanors.
Whitman who had been the Genoa High School cross county coach for two years resigned in September of last year after school administrators put him on administrative leave.
He came to the attention of police by way of school authorities who began an investigation of Whitman and his possible relationship with the girl after the company that monitors the district’s e-mail and computer activity flagged one of Whitman’s messages to the girl for review.
The girl told authorities that Whitman engaged in inappropriate conduct with her on three occasions, including an afternoon when they were marking a cross country course in the woods and that he kissed and touched her inappropriately. The girl indicated that she tried to “blow it off” and put it behind her.
Whitman faces up to six months in jail and a $1,500 fine at sentencing, which will be held on August 31st and in conjunction with a hearing to determine if Whitman must register as a sex offender.
