Bad Bad Teacher

Joseph Ryan Starkey, 25, a math teacher and soccer coach at R.A. Long High School in Longview, Washington has been arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student.

Starkey is being held on $75,000 bond on 13 counts of third-degree rape of a child, unlawful harboring of a minor and furnishing liquor to a minor.

His arraignment is scheduled for April 1.

Arrested along with Starkey was another man, Dennis Edward Baker, 38, charged with 16 counts of third-degree rape of a child and furnishing liquor to a minor. His bond was set at $20,000 with arraignment set for March 27th.

Both men are alleged to have sexually abused the same female victim, a student of Starkey’s at R.A. Long High School.

The men came to the attention of police when officers went to Starkey’s apartment on a tip that a runaway girl was there.

Police allegedly found Baker outside the apartment when they arrived. It is alleged that the girl revealed to officers that Baker has been having sex with her for the past year and a half and that she and Baker had sexual intercourse and oral sex two or three times a month. The girl also allegedly told officers that Barker given her alcohol, a cell phone, various gifts and cash.

The girl told police she also had a sexual relationship with Starkey.

It is alleged that Starkey admitted to harboring a runaway between March 12 and 15, and to having sexual intercourse with her and buying her alcohol.

4/02/08 - Arraignment

Joseph Starkey was arraigned yesterday on six counts of third-degree rape of a child and one count of furnishing liquor to a minor.

Starkey entered a not guilty plea to all charges.

His trial is currently scheduled for June 9th.

Starkey remains in jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Sentencing

Joseph Starkey has been sentenced to 60 months in prison on three counts of third-degree rape of a child.
