Hastey pleaded guilty to one of the count of improper relationship between an educator and a student. In exchange for his guilty plea the prosecution dropped the remaining 11 charges and recommended that Hastey be fined and placed on probation.

District Judge Tom Greenwell sentenced Hastey to 10 years deferred adjudication probation, a $1,500 fine and 240 hours of community service.

Hastey’s female victims, 17 and 15-years-old at the time of the offenses, told prosecutors that they did not want to deal with testifying about the incidents in a public trial and wanted the case resolved.

Or maybe the girls were lying and didn’t really want to lie under oath. From 11 counts to 1? That’s a pretty big gap, perhaps not enough evidence was collected, the DA dragged it out long enough, one would think she had enough time to collect these things. Pretty strange that the victims did not want to “deal” with testifying considering as how their lives have been so traumatized by these events, you would think they’d want justice. This just doesn’t make sense to me, this is why there are so many innocent people in jail for false allegations. Girls these days know that their word, is the most powerful thing they have, and are abusing it by blaming educators for their horrible up bringing. These girls hit on teachers, then when they get shot down, they take revenge.

This is part of the reason so many of these teachers get away with preying on students year after year. It must be extremely difficult to testify against someone who sexually violated you, regardless of your age or gender, but particularly difficult if you are a high school student. You have to return to school to face the humiliation of everyone knowing about the incident and potentially being ostracized by other students, teachers, and even the administration in some cases. Seems there should be a way to close the courtroom to include only those involved when there are minors involved. And, I agree, a minor should not have the right to drop charges. If the state had enough evidence to file charges they need to press forward with prosecution.

This should have been mandatory jail time for improper relations with a student. A minor should not have the right to drop charges. There should be mandatory minimum sentences.
