Jennifer Espinosa, a science and special education teacher at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois has been arrested on allegations of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male former student.
Espinosa is reportedly charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse as a result of an alleged eight-month relationship with the former student who is reportedly a known Sureno 13 gang member who was expelled from Main East High School in September of last year.
Espinosa came to the attention of police when officers allegedly detected the smell of marijuana coming from Esponisa’s vehicle. When officers stopped Espinosa’s vehicle, it was found to contain Esponisa, the 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man, also a reputed gang member.
Upon being question by police, it is alleged that she stated that she was a teacher and mentor to the boy until he was expelled and that their relationship began after his expulsion. It is further alleged that Espinosa also said that they have had sex at her home, in her car and at the high school.
Police also state that Espinosa told them that she “loves” the boy.
Following her arrest, Espinosa was reportedly being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Espinosa, who is reportedly married with two children and is a former soccer coach at Maine East High School, will reportedly be reassigned outside the classroom until the district finishes its investigation.
Espinosa is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Friday.
05/29/09 – Defense Attorney Questions Motive of Police Stop of Vehicle
A judge has granted a motion by Jennifer Espinosa’s defense attorney that all audio and video recordings related to the arrest, interrogation and three-day incarceration of Jennifer Espinosa be protected and made available to him.
The defense is questioning what probable cause police had to initially stop the car, and does not believe the officers could have smelled marijuana coming from a moving vehicle.
Defense attorney Frank DiFranco also claims Espinosa was not allowed to make a phone call during nine hours of interrogation and says processing her bond was delayed so she spent three days behind bars.
06/02/09 – School Board Votes To Fire Esponosa
By a vote of 7-0, the Maine Township High School District 207 officials voted on Monday night to terminate the employment of Jennifer Espinosa.
A school system spokesperson indicated that the termination was immediate.
07/08/09 – Court Appearance
On July 2, Jennifer Espinosa appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two counts of criminal sexual assault.
Her next court date is set for August 6th.
