Jason Simmons, 36, a teacher at Northmont Middle School, in Clayton, Ohio, has been arrested on allegations that he had sex three times with a 14-year-old female student. The sexual activity is alleged to have taken place since May of this year
Simmons came to the attention of police owing to rumors of a sexual relationship between a student and a teacher at Northmont Middle School. As investigators worked the case they reportedly discovered substance to the rumors and through contact with a 19-year-old relative of the alleged victim were able to develop additional information which resulted in warrants being served and evidence collected.
Simmons was hired as an intervention specialist in 2004 and assists “special needs” students who require support to complete their educations.
In addition to his job at the middle school Simmons is an assistant coach in football and track at the high school.
The school’s administration indicates that Simmons has been placed on administrative leave until the case is resolved.
Simmons who was arrested Monday is being held pending review of the case by local prosecutors.
Update 7/18/07:
Simmons made an initial court appearance Wednesday morning and pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual battery, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and importuning.
Bail was set at $500,000.
Simmons has been placed on administrative leave from his job.
Update 07/25/07:
Reportedly Jason Simmons has been released on home detention.
05/12/08 - Guilty Plea
Jason Simmons has leaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery. Three charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor were dropped in exchange for Simmons guilty plea.
Simmons faces up to 5 years in prison on each count when sentenced next month.
Simmons will be designated a Tier III Sex Offender. He will be required to report his address to the county sheriff for the rest of his life.
06/20/08 - Sentencing
Jason Simmons has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexual battery of a 14-year-old girl.
