Jack Clinton Owens, 47, a former substitute teacher and volunteer trainer at Marion County High School in Jasper, Tennessee has been arrested and charged with statutory rape by an authority figure, exploitation of a minor by electronic means and carrying a weapon on school property.
It is alleged that the first sexual encounter between Owens and the student athlete took place two weeks ago on school property.
The alleged relationship came to the attention of authorities when the student’s parents became aware of explicit text messages on the student’s cell phone and called police.
Police took over the texting from the student’s phone when the nature of the messages became sexually explicit. A meeting was arranged via text message between Owens and police posing as the student.
The meet up was set up for late at night at Marion County High School. When Owens arrived he was arrested.
Following his arrest Owens was being held in the Marion County Justice Center in lieu of $250,000 bond.
Reportedly the school system has terminated Owens.
07/30/08 – One Charge Dropped, Bond Reduced
Today a judge reduced Owens bond from $250,000 to $75,000 and ordered Owens to stay away from minors if he makes bond.
The weapons charge was dropped
12/11/08 – Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Reportedly Jack Owens has pleaded guilty to two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure.
Owens was sentenced to five years in prison.
