Christine Marie Johanson, 36, a former teacher’s assistant at Hudson Park Elementary School has been sentenced in Columbia County, Washington for the third-degree rape of a 15-year-old male student at Rainier Junior/Senior High School in Rainier, Washington Oregon.

Johanson was sentenced on four counts of third-degree rape, receiving 90 days in jail on each of the counts, with the sentences to run consecutively and with no reductions of time possible meaning she will serve 360 days in jail.

Johanson must surrender herself to the county jail Thursday at 5 p.m. to start the first of her four sentences.

Circuit Court Judge Ted Grove said, “I do believe that a significant period of incarceration is appropriate.” However the judge departed from the 30 month prison sentence requested by the prosecution owing to the belief that Johanson is amenable to sex offender treatment. Since sex offender treatment is not available in Oregon state prison, Grove decided to keep Johanson in the Columbia County Jail where her therapist can and will continue her treatment.

The six month sentence that Johanson received in Cowlitz County, Washington after pleading guilty to sex with the same boy in that country will run concurrent with the Columbia County, Oregon sentence.

Reportedly, after discovery of Johanson’s relationship with the boy, he acted out inappropriately in class and would shout that he should get “special privileges because he’d had sex with a teacher.” The victim’s mother soon moved him to another school district. He has been undergoing therapy for a year and reportedly, “He has had a decrease in self-esteem. He covers that by swaggering and boasting.”

Christine Marie Johanson, 36, a former teacher’s assistant at Hudson Park Elementary School has been sentenced in Cowlitz County, Washington for the third-degree rape of a 15-year-old male student at Rainier Junior/Senior High School in Rainier, Washington.

Johanson was sentenced to six months in jail on her guilty plea last month to the Cowlitz County charges. Johanson is facing three additional counts of third-degree rape of the same 15-year-old boy in Columbia County, Oregon and is expected to plead guilty to those charges on Friday.

Johanson admitted she had sexual relations with the boy for five months, relations that stretched across two states, while she worked at Hudson Park Elementary School in Rainier. At her sentencing she said, “‘I’m so sorry for everything I’ve put everyone through. I know I’ve caused pain, stress and anger because of my choices. I want the court to know, and I need everyone to know, that the poor choices I made were terrible mistakes that I wish I could truly undo.“.

The victim’s mother spoke at Johanson’s sentencing and spoke of the pain her family is going through, saying, “I can’t even go to the gas station without somebody saying something to me about how dare I do this to this person. Well, you know what? How dare this person do this to me?“.

The victim’s mother also said her son was forced to switch schools owing to the Johanson case, “He can no longer be in football. He no longer gets to go to the prom and everything else because we had to put him in an alternative school. There’s been a lot of things he had to give up because of this.”

Johanson was originally charged with 10 counts of third-degree rape, two counts of third-degree sodomy, 12 counts of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of furnishing liquor to a minor. It was alleged that Johanson forced the boy to have sex with her, repeatedly between March and August, 2006.

Update 8/31/07:

Christine Marie Johanson today pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in Columbia County for her sexual affair with the same 15-year-old male victim above.

The Columbia County prosecutor is seeking a 30 month prison sentence for Johanson because the presumptive, or standard, range for a fourth conviction of third-degree rape is 25 to 30 months.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 3rd.

News media reports indicate that Johanson who would work with the boy in her resource room would drive him home when he was suspended from school for wearing his pants too low and that they would then go have sex.

Additionally it was reported that Johanson and the boy were caught by Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies in September having sex in the Neer City Cemetery after a Rainier High School football game.

The prosecution is hoping for a 30 month prison sentence at Johanson’s sentencing on August 20th.
