(05/15/08 – Initial BBT Report)

Fernando Gonzalez, 34, a math teacher at North Shore High School in Galena Park, Texas has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography.

 Fernando Gonzalez

Gonzalez came to the attention of police when students allegedly saw Gonzales watching porn on a computer at his desk and masturbating in an empty classroom. It is reported that the students saw the incident through the windows of the classroom door.

The students reported the incident to school administrators who confronted Gonzalez, suspended him, escorted him off school property and notified police.

During the course of the investigation police found two computers in his classroom, one of which belongs to the school and one of which was “unauthorized”. Allegedly both contained child pornography. Police also claim they found several computer disks containing child pornography.

Police also seized two computers from the Gonzalez home.

Gonzalez, who has been with Galena Park ISD for 10 years, was suspended with pay and told not to return to the school campus.

Police say that after he was arrested, a very “embarrassed and ashamed” Gonzalez confessed.

Former North Shore high-school teacher Fernando Gonzalez, who pled guilty last week to a charge of possession of child pornography, is one of several teachers nationwide who have been implicated in such crimes. The indictment in case number 4:08-cr-00797 alleges that Mr. Gonzalez possessed 288 floppy disks that contained video and still images of child pornography.

A press release from the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Texas reports that Mr. Gonzalez was a math teacher at one of the campuses of Galena Independent School District’s North Shore High School and that students saw him looking at images of child pornography on his school computer while fondling himself. Although the press release states that the sentencing has been set for September 10, 2009, the court docket indicates that United States District Judge Keith Ellison will sentence Mr. Gonzalez on September 23rd.

The guilty plea of Mr. Gonzalez adds to the list of arrests, pleas, and sentences of teachers in child-pornography cases in 2009. According to press releases from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), those defendants have included a first-grade teacher in Tennessee, a sixth-grade teacher in New Jersey, a fifth-grade teacher in Arizona, a middle-school teacher and an elementary-school music teacher in California, a sixth-grade teacher in Vermont, a music teacher in Missouri, a high-school teacher and volleyball coach in Virginia, a physical-education teacher in Massachusetts, and a middle-school teacher at the Kadena Air Force Base in Japan.

The U.S. Attorney credits the Houston Metro Internet Crimes against Children Task Force (also known as the Houston Metro ICAC), the Pasadena Independent School District Police Department, the Office of the Harris County District Attorney, and the Constable of Harris County Precinct 3 for their work on the investigation of Mr. Gonzalez. The Gonzalez case and several of the others mentioned above are part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide effort that the DOJ launched in 2006 to combat sexual predators who use the Internet to entice and sexually exploit children.
