Eugene Austin Evans, 64, a retired teacher from Encinal High School in Alameda, California and the Scoutmaster and Skipper of the S.S.S. Farallon, owned by Berkeley Sea Scouts has been arrested on six felony counts of sexual assault involving four boys between 13 and 17 years old.

Evans is being held on $1 million bail.
Police believe that Evans was responsible for numerous sexual assaults on boys and over a number of years. Allegations against Evans include lewd and lascivious acts against a minor under 14 years of age, oral copulation with a minor under 16 years of age and penetration with a foreign object of a minor under 14 years of age.
A Berkeley Police spokesperson said, “they have yet to determine definitively how long Evans may have been molesting youths”.
Police also say there may be more victims who have not stepped forward and police are asking anyone with information in the case or anyone who may know additional victims to call the police department’s Youth Services Detail at (510) 981-5715.
Eugene Evans sued Berkeley after the city revoked free berthing privileges because the group’s parent organization, the Boy Scouts, bar atheist and gay members. Evans appealed to the California Supreme Court and lost. Pacific Legal Foundation took his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court which let stand the state supreme court ruling that upheld Berkeley’s decision to deny free slips. During the fight, Evans a was hero of the political right receiving the attention of conservative columnist James J. Kirkpatrick who profiled Evans.
Reportedly Evans taught at Alameda High School for nearly a decade before transferring to Encinal High School. At the time of Evans retirement in June 2004 he had been a teacher for 31 years.
Webmaster’s note: Although the accused is a retired teacher, owing to the allegations on the part of police that he was molesting boys for years it was deemed proper to list this case on badbadteacher.com.
12/06/07 – Arraigned
Eugene Evans was arraigned on Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court on six felony counts of oral copulation with a minor, engaging in substantial sexual acts with a minor, penetration with a foreign object and showing or distributing lewd material to a minor.
Following arraignment Evans was held on $190,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday to enter a plea.
Evans came to the attention of authorities when one boys and his parents went to Berkeley Police with allegations that Evans molested the boy. The boy provided police with the names of other boys that might have been victimized. Of those boys three more told police that Evans molested them.
Police say that they seized a computer containing child pornography from Evans home and that it is believed that Evans showed the pornography to his victims during the molestations, which are alleged to have occurred aboard the Farallon ship or after Sea Scouts gatherings.
Several supporters of Evans who were in attendance at his arraignment believe the allegations against Evans are false and were reportedly discussing ways to raise bail money.
07/14/08 – No Contest Plea and Sentencing
On Monday, Eugene Austin Evans pleaded no contest and was convicted of two counts of child molestation.
Evans was sentenced to six years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.
09/26/08 – Formal Sentencing
Today Eugene Austin Evans was formally sentenced to six years in prison for molesting two boys aboard his boat.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle:
As Eugene Austin Evans, 65, of Kensington was led away in handcuffs from an Oakland courtroom, three rows of supporters stood in recognition, apparently refusing to accept his admission minutes earlier that he had been molesting boys on his boat, the SSS Farallon, for 30 years and warning them that, “What happens on the boat stays on the boat.”

You guys are all blinded by love for the man. Let’s see. It’s been 25 years, but I still remember a few thing he said to us as 13 year olds. “Pudwackin time”, “Puddles of Love”, “Rim Job”. And why did he pay such close attention to the weak ones? I remember it all. Nothing illegal, but a lot of completely inappropriate behavior by a Scoutmaster. Booze and pot? He always turned his head to it. I’m 42 now. I have 3 kids. I know a lot about the case. You guys need to wake up.
Who cares what good Gene may have done? I used to be in sea scouts and I am not surprised at all that Gene was arrested and accused of child molestation. Nobody can deny the fact that they found child porn on his computer. That can NOT be a set up job. The evidence says it all and anything all you guys who still think he’s innocent say doesn’t matter to the judge.
I have known Gene for 30 years I was On the Farallon for 5 years. I am not surprised nor do I think this is a conspiracy or set up job. I personally have several friends that I went through the scouts with that will never speak to him again because of inappropriate sexual behavior hopefully they have the courage to come forward and confront Gene. We all trusted Gene to take care of us, he was our skipper, our adult leader, a marine and someone we looked up to. We trusted him to take care of us especially the kids that couldn’t take care of themselves, help them he did but I believe he used some of the weaker kids for his own selfish reasons. Gene is a very smart man, he knew who was vulnerable and who he could take advantage of, a very smart predator, he was able to fly under the radar for many years. Any of you that were on the Boat ask yourselves how many adults do you have graphic, crude, sexual discussions/ comments with like the ones with Gene, this sort of talk is maybe normal with guy friends your own age but not with your parents, a teacher or someone who is supposed to be supervising you. Have you ever asked yourself why Gene didn’t want any parent involvement or help? Does anyone remember Gene’s close friend and fellow Sea Scout Skipper in San Mateo? His nick name was “STINGER” do you remember any stories about him, does anyone remember what he went to jail for? Yes child molestation!!.
I am angry with Gene because he taught so many of us so many valuable lessons, good work ethic, team work, citizenship, how to be successful and pride. All of the good he has done will always be overshadowed by his molestation charges and he will be remembered for how he took advantage of kids and not for all the good he has done
I just contacted the Berkeley P.D. at (510)981-5900 and left a VM for Det. Sean Ross. Please post this number. Please call this # in
support of Mr. Eugene “Gene” Evans. He’s not guilty. He’s innocent
and justice will prevail for him, and against those who have falsely
accused him. They have no idea of the old crews who know the truth and who will come down on them like a ton of bricks once their lies have been exposed. The truth shall prevail.
I was aboard an Alameda ship, the Barclay Stephens, from 1975-1979. We knew the Berkeley ships, the Northland and the Farallon, well. I
never say nor heard anything bad, poor, or negative about Mr. Evans.
In fact, I only heard good, excellent and positive things about him.
Please publish a number where we may contact the Berkeley P.D., in order to echo his defense. I also attended Alameda High School in those same years, where he was a wood shop teacher. I again never heard anything negative about him, and again only heard positive things about him. His ship and crews were always topnotch, polished
& well-mannered and disciplined. He is not guilty. He is innocent.
Mates of the Farallon,
I visited Gene today in the pokey, he is doing well. He appreciates all the support that everyone is giving him. I think we all know Gene better than the bloggers do, so let them say what they want. There were many parents and shipmates at his arraignment on yesterday supporting Gene. You can contact me at egae7@yahoo.com, by the way that stands for Eagle, Globe, anchor.
I was the Boatswain on the SSS Farallon from 1986-1991. I was a Sea Scout for 2 years prior to achieving this leadership role. Eugene Evans is one of the greatest mentors that we could have ever asked for. My kids always hear stories of my Sea Scout days and it is because of Gene that my organization and leadership roles today own of a multimillion dollar company. I am 100% behind the defense of Gene and so is my brother and many friends who joined the Sea Scouts at a young age and found challenges and victory under the tutorage of one Eugene Evans.
I joined Gene’s crew my freshman year of high school, my older brother invited me and i stayed long after he graduated. Gene has been nothing but a mentor and model american. I am Shocked and Disgusted that anyone would EVER accuse Gene of this. My Mom got re-married and her new husband used to go rowing with Gene. I have worked on Gene’s Boat in the past and have also been on a couple over nights. This is someone who i have seen as almost family and i need to know what i can do to testify in Gene’s defence. I KNOW he is innocent!
I was apart of the Encinal Row Team for four years. Never in my life have I seen Gene make obscene acts of any sort to anyone. He was also my old woodshop teacher. I dont understand how anyone can take these alligations seriously. Gene is a wonderful teacher and a great ship captian, but most of all he’s a good man.
For J Schuder and A. Kenin, if you have good things to say about Gene, please call the Berkeley PD. and let them know that you havn’t seen any of this occur..They might be giving you a call anyway, I think they have the roster. From my experience in law enforcement, there have been many people accused of crime that the allegations were false, which I hope this is the case. The more support we can gather the better. If you have contact with any of the guys from the boat, have them call the PD. I know the PD only wants to hear bad things, But those who are truthful prevail.
Thanks
I was a member of the SSS Farallon from 1997 until 2001. There were no instances of inappropriate conduct on Gene’s part while he and I were alone or with others. Maybe I just wasn’t his type, but I can’t imagine Gene maintaining an erection, much less risking legal trouble to lose one. I can’t say I’m shocked, but I will reserve judgement for the trial.
Something for you all to consider – this is taken straight from a predator: Here is a quote from a predator (deacon in his church) out of the Predators book. What is interesting to note is the predator, Patrick was being honest and candid about how he would operate within the church. He counted on people going to bat for him, based on his good solid reputation with the church. He didn’t look like a predator; so he must not be one, or so everyone in the church thought. He didn’t have to do too much to convince people he was innocent. Everyone jumped to his defense without him having to lift a finger.
Sometimes the words were not even necessary. Like I said before, they immediately rallied to my defense when I was accused of being a sexual offender. They said, “We know this young man. He has been in our community all of his life. We know his parents, his grandparents, his aunts, his uncles. This is not something that he would do. This is not something that goes along with behavior that we see him in day in and day out,” and that was true because I was very careful that they did not see that behavior day in and day out. Most of my deviant behavior happened at night time and behind the scenes and away and far from my important people who could make those kinds of judgments that yes, indeed, Patrick is the kind of person who would go around molesting children.
I have been a part of this sea scout group for four years now and I never noticed any inapropriate behavior from Evans. He has tuaght my friends and I carpentry, plumbing, navigation and boating skills, while demonstrating strong and respectful leadership and outstanding citizenship. He is one of the best, most positive role models in my life and it breaks my heart that some sea scouts would try to frame him.
I have also known Mr. Evans many years. I served on the Farallon from 1983-1987a nd still keep in contact with him. He was also my woodshop teacher for 4 years. I have never, ever seen him act inappropriately towards any of the scouts. He was an excellent teacher and willing to teach those who wanted to learn about boat safety, navigation, operation and craftsmanship. During my years in high school, Mr. Evans would pick the scouts up from home on the weekends to work on the boat, which started as a wood skeleton frame. After all these years that boat is now in service. I have spent many times alone with Mr. Evans working on the boat. At no time has he ever approached me of what he is being accused of. with Mr. Evans, it was all business.
Mr. Evans wanted to make sure that the scouts were doing the right thing. Many of us that were on the boat, have become police officers, joined the military or entered other succesful careers, and I owe part of that to Mr. Evans.
It is unfortunate that the MEDIA has already convicted Mr. Evans and websites like this have done the same.
Lets not forget our US Constitutional rights people.
I have known Mr. Evans for 25 years, and was a scout in his group from junior high though high school. Never, in all my years of contact with him, did I myself ever see, hear, or feel anything that would make me think that these charges are true. Mr. Evans has been a dedicated Sea Scout Skipper for many years, and in my experience, has always gone above and beyond the call of duty to help, teach, and support the members of the group, giving them opportunities and teaching them skills that many of them, myself included, never would have had otherwise. We claim in our legal system that a person is innocent until proven guilty. Let us approach theses charges in that spirit.
