Eugene Austin Evans, 64, a retired teacher from Encinal High School in Alameda, California and the Scoutmaster and Skipper of the S.S.S. Farallon, owned by Berkeley Sea Scouts has been arrested on six felony counts of sexual assault involving four boys between 13 and 17 years old.
Evans is being held on $1 million bail.
Police believe that Evans was responsible for numerous sexual assaults on boys and over a number of years. Allegations against Evans include lewd and lascivious acts against a minor under 14 years of age, oral copulation with a minor under 16 years of age and penetration with a foreign object of a minor under 14 years of age.
A Berkeley Police spokesperson said, “they have yet to determine definitively how long Evans may have been molesting youths”.
Police also say there may be more victims who have not stepped forward and police are asking anyone with information in the case or anyone who may know additional victims to call the police department’s Youth Services Detail at (510) 981-5715.
Eugene Evans sued Berkeley after the city revoked free berthing privileges because the group’s parent organization, the Boy Scouts, bar atheist and gay members. Evans appealed to the California Supreme Court and lost. Pacific Legal Foundation took his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court which let stand the state supreme court ruling that upheld Berkeley’s decision to deny free slips. During the fight, Evans a was hero of the political right receiving the attention of conservative columnist James J. Kirkpatrick who profiled Evans.
Reportedly Evans taught at Alameda High School for nearly a decade before transferring to Encinal High School. At the time of Evans retirement in June 2004 he had been a teacher for 31 years.

12/06/07 – Arraigned
Eugene Evans was arraigned on Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court on six felony counts of oral copulation with a minor, engaging in substantial sexual acts with a minor, penetration with a foreign object and showing or distributing lewd material to a minor.
Following arraignment Evans was held on $190,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday to enter a plea.
Evans came to the attention of authorities when one boys and his parents went to Berkeley Police with allegations that Evans molested the boy. The boy provided police with the names of other boys that might have been victimized. Of those boys three more told police that Evans molested them.
Police say that they seized a computer containing child pornography from Evans home and that it is believed that Evans showed the pornography to his victims during the molestations, which are alleged to have occurred aboard the Farallon ship or after Sea Scouts gatherings.
Several supporters of Evans who were in attendance at his arraignment believe the allegations against Evans are false and were reportedly discussing ways to raise bail money.
07/14/08 – No Contest Plea and Sentencing
On Monday, Eugene Austin Evans pleaded no contest and was convicted of two counts of child molestation.
Evans was sentenced to six years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.
09/26/08 – Formal Sentencing
Today Eugene Austin Evans was formally sentenced to six years in prison for molesting two boys aboard his boat.

As Eugene Austin Evans, 65, of Kensington was led away in handcuffs from an Oakland courtroom, three rows of supporters stood in recognition, apparently refusing to accept his admission minutes earlier that he had been molesting boys on his boat, the SSS Farallon, for 30 years and warning them that, “What happens on the boat stays on the boat.”

The same ones that labeled him a “homophobe” because of being tied to the BSA? Why wasn’t he charged with child porn? Because there was none.

Boy’s I hate to say it “But I told you so!” Gene it’s a little late but I hope you can reflect on your actions, all the great things you did for so many kids and the stories we tell always be over shadowed and end with your conviction. In back of our minds somewhere we all new and that’s why none of us subjected our children to “The Boat”.

Levitt, you cannot believe everything you read in the newspaper. Gene can barely use his cellphone. The boat had a few computers donated to us. The one taken by the police from Gene’s home was an extra and was likely never ever turned on after being donated. I don’t think that it was even plugged in when removed from his home.
Todd – how’s gene doing in the “pokey” now. Gene was an (*******) and I hope he gets bf’ed in prison. How about those poor kids? Don’t you and all his follower’s feel betrayed now? Or is gene stilling claiming innocence and saying he pleaded out because, although innocent, he saw on Law & Order SVU re-run that he was probably getting 25?

I want you to know how deeply troubling it is to hear of people, especially Scouts, who are standing up for Gene Evans. It is indisputable that the Berkeley Police discovered child pornography on his computer. The boys who have come forward about the repeated sexual abuse they endured are incredibly brave, and should be seriously listened to, not automatically mocked and marginalized. Several former Sea Scouts, besides the four that have already come forward, also thought that Evan’ s blatant sex sense of humor was highly inappropriate and suspect. Please, any and all Sea Scouts and former Sea Scouts need to step forward and TELL THE TRUTH!!

In 1980, because of some friction I was having at home, I was recruited by my brother to join the Farallon, under the belief that the discipline that had improved his behavior would positively affect mine. During my time there (about nine months) I never experienced or observed any overtly pederastic acts on Gene’s part. However, I can still vividly recall an occasion when I was working on the dry docked boat with 3 or 4 other boys and Gene. We were relaxing after lunch, and the skipper struck up a conversation. He asked us all about our sexual experience, how far we’d ever been with a girl etc. Then, he described his interest in having a prostitute anally perform prostate massage on him during oral sex. I realized how totally inappropriate and creepy this was. I felt embarrassed and yet because my family all thought so highly of Gene it seemed weird to tell my parents about it. In retrospect, I recognize this as the kind of ‘feeling-out’ research that a predatory person would employ to identify a victim.
Some of the above posts describe how certain kids, softer, more gentle (and perhaps effeminate) than the others, were oddly favored by Gene. They were sometimes given special roles and privileges. Often, they were the first to be picked up and the last to be dropped off for meetings and other events. In the mid-eighties, long after I’d left the Farallon, I was at a dorm party at UC Berkeley. A flamboyant gay man came up to me, addressed me by name and was talking as though we’d known each other. I asked him where we’d met and he turned out to be one of these favored kids from seascouts. Gene had done a lot for this kid when I was on the boat, including helping him to get into the Navy as an officer, among other things. Yet, when I asked him if he still had contact with Gene, it was made clear that he wanted nothing to do with him, but no explanation as to why was given.
Many former Farallon sea scouts don’t believe the accusations against Gene and are asking why no one came forward sooner if he’d been doing this for years. To them I have one question – Would you have said anything if it happened to you? I know that I wouldn’t have. My generation and prior generations of boys were taught that we were supposed a be able to handle any situation as men. To admit to being raped or molested would have been equal to being less than male, which was totally unthinkable – better to internalize the shame as our own. If you don’t believe me, look at the accounts of the many catholic boys who were abused yet found themselves unable to come forward for decades, if at all.
A high percentage of boys who joined the Farallon have gone on to tremendous financial and personal success in their adult lives. Many of these were trouble makers engaging in borderline criminal behavior before they became involved with Gene. He taught them discipline and gave them the opportunity to bathe in the waters of success. (Lest we should forget, the Farallon was resented by most other boats because of their near total success in competition.) Did he really do these things? I don’t know. Yet, it must be recognized that there is a pattern of behavior here that cannot be ignored, and that is not a frame job. Those kids who stood up to say what happened to them have a great deal of courage and if they are speaking the truth, they are earning justice for past generations of boys who were too scared and ashamed to speak out – and may justice be done. For those of you who benefited positively from Gene’s guidance, thank your lucky stars – there, but for the grace of god, go you and I.
I was on the Farralon from 79-81. Gene said & did inappropiate thing all the time. He would pee & stoke him self on the summer cruse when there were the boys around several times a day. I saw him several time grab guys butts and crotches. One time when I was alone with him he made an advance towards me. When I got p***** at him he back off quickly. A friend who was on the boat at the same time told me one of the guys on the boat 4 years earlier told him back then that he had molested one of the kids. He didn’t remember the name

I remember being new to the boat and confronted
with an issue I was only slightly involved in.
He said “If I sucked 1 inch of a 10 inch cock,
I would still be a cock sucker.” Where sandwiches
were p**** butter and jam and pudding was “pud.”
Overall boat experience positive until I woke
one day 25 years later when my son was interested
in the Scouts. I had a painted mosaic of the dark
side and hell if my son will ever go near any scout
