Elwin Quitano, a sixth-grade teacher at Astumbo Middle School in Dededo, Guam has reportedly been arrested on allegations of making sexual advances or comments towards a 12-year-old female student.

Quitano came to the attention of authorities when the girl complained to school administrators and they in turn called police. Since the investigation began a second student has also complained against Quitano.
Reportedly Quitano is charged with misdemeanor counts of official misconduct, child abuse and harassment, a petty misdemeanor.
Reportedly, following the complaint against Quitano he was transferred to the Guam Public School System main office.
Following his arrest, Quitano was reportedly held in lieu of $2,000 cash bail and is set for arraignment tomorrow.

PNC News reports that Elwin Quitano says the allegation against him is false and that he believes the school administration is trying to get him fired.
07/07/09 – Motion To Dismiss Denied, Trial to Proceed
Guam Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson has reportedly denied a motion to dismiss one of the charges against Elwin Quitano.
Jury selection for Quitano’s trial is set to begin.

Teachers need to remember that they are not hired to do anything other than teach. It’s hard to say whether or not this guy is guilty of what he’s charged with. He might just have been joking around. You can’t do that sort of thing with kids anymore. You are there to teach and not to try to win a popularity contest with the students. Failure to realize this will get you into serious trouble sooner or later. And whatever you do, NEVER say ANYTHING personal or in reference to sexuality.
