Edgardo Vilas, 42, a teacher at Rancho del Campo, a county-run detention camp for juvenile offenders in Campo, California has been charged in federal court with possessing child pornography.
Vilas came to the attention of authorities by way of an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigation of a large Internet-based child pornography enterprise that operates more than 200 child exploitation Web sites.
Reportedly when federal agents searched Vilas’ home they found CDs and DVDs containing child pornography. Allegedly Vilas admitted to agents that he downloaded the images to his computer.
Vilas has denied that he molested any of his students.
2/13/08 - Guilty Plea
Edgardo Vilas has pleaded guilty to a charge that he possessed child pornography.
He faces up to 10 years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release at sentencing set for May 2nd.
05/09/08 - Sentencing
Edgardo Vilas was today sentenced to 3 years in prison.
In addition to the prison time Vilas will also serve five years probation and have to register as a sex offender.
