Edgar L. Selavka, 50, a former preschool teacher at the People’s Institute and the Center for Early Childhood Education at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.

Selavka was also the director of Christian education at Edwards Church. He came to the attention of authorities when his backpack was stolen from the church.
After Selavka had reported the backpack stolen, a security guard at Thornes Marketplace found the backpack in a men’s room with its contents strewn about.
Among the contents were Selavka’s wallet and a substantial amount of child pornography including some depicting naked children engaged in sexual acts with adults. Police also found two compact disks with additional images of children as young as 4 years old.
The prosecution is seeking a sentence of one year in jail followed by seven years of probation. The defense is seeking a more lenient sentence. Sentencing is set for June and Selavka remains free on $5,000 bail.
07/09/08 - Sentencing
Today Edgar Selavka was sentenced to 2 and a ½ years in the Hampshire County Correctional Center.
He will be required to serve one year with the remainder to be suspended.
Selavka will also be required to serve seven years of probation.
During his probation Selavka is to continue sex offender treatment, continue his current medications, continue substance abuse counseling and have no unsupervised contact with minors.
