Douglas S. Cavett, 43, a former teacher’s aide at Hunt Middle School in Burlington, Vermont has been arrested on allegations of the long term molestation of a boy, beginning when the boy was 11-years-old in 1991.

Douglas S. Cavett

Cavett is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of driving with a suspended license. At an initial appearance Cavett’s attorney entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.

The alleged victim, who is now 28, reportedly told investigators that Cavett molested him in 1991 when Cavett was a teacher’s aide at Hunt Middle School in Burlington and that there were over 100 incidents of sex with Cavett between 1991 and 1997

The alleged victim has reportedly also told investigators that Cavett hosted numerous parties at his home in Milton where he allegedly gave booze and pot to young boys.

Cavett came to the attention of police earlier this month when the former student and alleged victim told his probation officer about being molested by Cavett between 1991 and 1997.

Police were conducting a search of Cavett’s home on Wednesday when Cavett arrived and reportedly tried to flee the scene. Police arrested him on a dead-end road in Milton.

Police say that Cavett was convicted in 2004 on two counts of improper touching of a 17-year-old boy and that he served 30 days in jail but was not placed on the sex offender registry.

School administrators have indicated that Cavett was hired as a para-educator for the district in November 1992 and left that job in 1995. It is further reported that Cavett became a sometime-substitute teacher for the district until 2001

Police continue to investigate this case and are asking anyone with further information on the matter to call the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations at 802-859-3084.
