Demond L. Edwards, 25, a long-term substitute teacher and assistant football coach at Perth Amboy High School in Perth Amboy, New Jersey reportedly has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a female student.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office indicates that Edwards is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with one female student and sending inappropriate text messages to another.
Edwards who is facing charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child came to the attention of authorities when the school system reported a possible improper teacher-student relationship to the Department of Children and Families and the Perth Amboy police.
Edwards turned himself in to police on Monday and was thereafter being held on $50,000 bail with no 10% option.
08/20/08 - Guilty Plea
Demond Edwards pleaded guilty yesterday to a count of child endangerment, admitting he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student and sent inappropriate text messages to a 15-year-old girl.
The plea deal means that Edwards faces a maximum sentence of 364 days in the Middlesex County jail, but avoids trial and a potential 10-year prison term.
As part of the plea agreement, Edwards must surrender his substitute teaching certificate and will never be allowed to serve as a substitute again.
Formal sentencing is set for October 3rd.
Pending sentencing, Edwards remains free on bond.
10/03/08 - Sentencing
Today, Demond Edwards was sentenced to five years probation.
Edwards was also required to undergo counseling and surrender his teaching certificate.
He will not be required to register as a sex offender.

Let me see if I got this correct: He, an adult, entered a guilty plea for having sex with a minor female and will not do jail time or not have to register as a sex offender. The judge must be one of those “Hug a Thug” liberals judges I’ve read about where crimes against children don’t warrants jail time.
What if it was the judge’s daughter who was banging with this guy? Would he want him to get off this easy? You have to wonder…
