David Jones Sentenced
Posted by: Webmaster in Coaches, Hall of Shame, ME-IS-MV, Middle Schools, North Carolina, Science TeachersDavid Campbell Jones, 47, a former science teacher and coach at Phillips Middle School and a Boy Scout troop leader in Chapel Hill, North Carolina who pleaded guilty to enticement of a minor was sentenced today in federal court in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Jones today received a minimum term of 10 years in prison, a $25,000 fine and 25 years supervised probation once he is released from prison. This will likely mean that Jones will be under supervision for the rest of his natural life.
At his sentencing, Jones told the judge:
I apologize to the victim and the victim’s family, and I hope that that will be relayed to them. I apologize to my family, friends, school and Scouts, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community, and most of all God for my actions. They were wrong.
Jones who worked at Phillips Middle School for 23 years was most recently an athletics director, football coach and eighth-grade science teacher. He was a very popular teacher and coach who the students referred to as “Coach Jones” at his encouragement.
Jones was arrested by sheriff’s deputies in August of 2006 on allegations that he used a computer to solicit a 15-year-old Orange County boy for sex. Jones who called himself “NiceguyfromNC27707″ on-line was arrested when he showed up at the boy’s home. At the time of his arrest Jones reportedly had in his possession lubricant, condoms and a digital camera.
