Christopher I. Dumaine, 39, of Readfield, Maine and a long time English teacher at Monmouth Academy, in Monmouth, Maine was indicted Thursday on charges he had sex with a female student from the high school.
Dumaine was indicted on two counts of gross sexual assault and two counts of unlawful sexual contact. Following his arraignment he was reportedly released on $5,000 property or $500 cash bond.
Bond conditions specify that Dumaine is prohibited from contact with the girl named in the indictment, her family, and Monmouth Academy faculty and students. Dumaine is also prohibited from having unsupervised contact with girls younger than 18.
Reportedly the indictment indicates that the alleged sexual acts occurred between June 1 and September 14.
Dumaine who has taught at the school for 16 years is reportedly a graduate of the school himself and resigned effective September 17th.
Christopher Dumaine was arrested again at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday when police found him and the alleged victim in the driveway of the girl’s home. Dumaine was charged with violating bail conditions by having contact with the girl.
Dumaine out on $500 cash bail since Oct. 11 was now being held in jail without bail, but officials says he may request another bail here in a week. Otherwise his next scheduled court date is January 8.
11/13/07 - Guilty Plea
Christopher Dumaine pleaded guilty in Kennebec County Superior Court to two counts of gross sexual assault, two counts of unlawful sexual contact and one count of violating conditions of release.
Dumaine was sentenced to four years in jail, with all but nine months suspended, three years’ probation, he must stay away from Monmouth Academy, the victim and anyone under 18, except for his children and he will be required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The 16-year-old victim protesting Dumaine’s punishment, wrote a letter to the court in which she stated, “(B)e it perceived morally disgraceful or a young ideal, it is what it is, and no one can convince me otherwise. I don’t see how this restriction is better for me; for it is limiting my pursuit of happiness where I see it should be granted.”

The prior speaker makes a good point about the negative effect this will have on Mr. Dumaine’s family- his wife and children have and will suffer. However I doubt that they would suffer any more from this event than they would from any affair, were it not for the negativity and demonization people publicly express toward the event. Yes, Mr. Dumaine’s actions were illegal. However they were only illegal because he was a teacher at the girl’s school. Sixteen is the legal age of consent in this state, as well as many others. The law merely makes an exception when the relationship is between a teacher/priest/coach/authority and a student. Since Mr. Dumaine had become this girl’s teacher, he committed a crime. Had he quit his job (or transferred to another school) and then had the affair, we wouldn’t even know we were supposed to want to burn him at the stake. Certainly what he did was morally questionable, but I would still shake his hand if I were to see him today.

Chris Dumaine is out now. If he can stay away from the young piece of @$$ he will be on probation for 10 years. Broken probation, (Hooking up with young teen again) he will go back to prison where he belongs.

As a former classmate of Chris, and currently a 39 year old man myself, I am sorry to see how far he has fallen. And, as a 39 year old man, who has been 17, 23, 30, 35, and 39 years old, and who has seen (and remembers) what 16 year old girls looked like then and now, there simply is no excuse for his criminal failure. His former students who still respect him–I hope in time you will grow and understand exactly what he did, what level of betrayal he committed, and how easy it is for a grown man to take advantage of a younger girl–exactly why we have such laws in place. Get over your petty feelings–you are defending him for your own sake and validation. Look at his family, DESTROYED by this action on his part. While he may have been an excellent teacher, he did a despicable thing. He did not go to jail for being a bad teacher, he is going to jail (a measly 9 months) for being a bad human being. The 16 yr old girl here may not realize fully what has happened to her for some time–I pray she does, and is able to move on. Anyone who for a second wants to defend him in any way, why don’t you call his wife and kids and see how they are doing–if they need anything, some support, maybe help shoveling the snow out of their yard. After you shovel that snow, and make sure his kids get tucked in each night, and explain to them why daddy isn’t around, then go make yourself feel better about what a great guy he is.
BTW, I are an engineer, not an English major, so please excuse my grammar.

Apparently they love each other. I reserve the right to believe he just likes raping children.
