Charles L. Barton III Guilty
Posted by: Webmaster in Elementary Schools, Florida, ME-FV, Retired, Teachers - MiscCharles L. Barton III, 62, a retired teacher who taught at the Groveland Elementary School, in Groveland, Florida for 32 years has pleaded guilty to molesting five girls.
All five victims were known to Barton from the school where he taught second and fourth-grade. Barton retired from the school in 2002.
All of the girls, who were preteens at the time of the alleged offenses, claimed to have been molested at Barton’s home, where some had spent the night baby-sitting his grandchildren or attending pool parties.
Barton and his wife were released from their posts with a Girl Scouts troop in 2004, however the organization said it was not for any impropriety with children. In addition to their work with Girl Scouts, Barton and his wife organized and supervised Friday night dances for teens in Groveland in 2002 and 2003.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Barton must serve four years of house arrest to be followed by 15 years of sex-offender probation, he will be required to keep a log of his travels, adhere to a curfew and comply with other court orders. Any violation of the terms of his agreement may result in Barton’s being imprisoned for up to 15 years.
Barton must register as a sex offender.
