Richard Seely Noles, 22, of Charlottesville, Virginia and a former alternative education teacher and track and cross country coach at Nelson County High School was charged Tuesday with felony computer solicitation of a juvenile, according to school and police officials.

Noles came to the attention of authorities by way of a complaint by the father of the alleged victim.

Although few details of the alleged crime are available, the arrest warrant reportedly indicates that the alleged crime occurred last Thursday. It is alleged that Noles solicited a child at least 15 years old but under 18 for sex.

Noles is the second Nelson County High School track coach to be arrested for soliciting sex from a minor. In September, 2007 Tim Bennett, a librarian and coach for the school’s indoor and outdoor track and field programs was arrested in an Internet sting for the solicitation of sex from an officer posing as a 13-year-old girl.

Richard Noles reportedly resigned from the school on Monday and was arrested on the solicitation charge on Tuesday.

Following his arrest, Noles was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

His next court appearance is set for March 12th.

10/13/09 – Guilty Plea

Reportedly, Richard Noles has pleaded guilty and admitted to taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, a second count of indecent liberties won’t be prosecuted and there is no agreement as to the sentence.

Noles, who faces up to five years in prison, remains free on bond pending sentencing.

The judge ordered a victim’s impact statement and set sentencing for April 7, 2010.

Rodney Bower, 54, a teacher at Gunston Elementary School in Lorton, Virginia has turned himself in to police in response to allegations that he inappropriately touched a female student.

Bower has reportedly been charged with aggravated sexual battery.

The sexual assault is alleged to have occurred between February 1 and February 14 at the victim’s home where Bower was tutoring the girl. Reportedly police were not contacted about the allegation until March 20th.

Bower, who has taught at Gunston Elementary since 2005, has been placed on unpaid administrative leave according to a school district spokesperson.

10/08/08 – Sentencing

In July, Rodney Bower pleaded guilty to the sexual battery of an 11-year-old girl.

Last week, that girl got to tell the court how his actions had affected her.

At the end of the sentencing hearing, the judge sentenced Bower to 10 years in prison, with five years suspended, to be followed by five years probation upon his release.

The judge also ordered Bower to receive sex-offender treatment, undergo polygraph tests and register as a sex offender.

Matthew Judd Collins, 26, a 5th and 6th grade physical education teacher at Rustburg Middle School in Rustburg, Virginia has been charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15.

Reportedly Collins came to the attention of authorities by way of notification from a friend of the alleged victim’s family.

The Campbell County Sheriff’s Department has revealed little information regarding the alleged victim and even less regarding the alleged crime or crimes.

A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson did say that the alleged victim is not related to Collins, that the alleged incident(s) did not take place at school and that the investigation is focused on the period between January 1st and March 13th. The Sheriff’s spokesperson would not state whether the alleged victim is or is not a student at the school.

A school spokesperson has stated that Collins will “not be in the classroom”, but refused to further discuss his status with the school system.

Following his arrest, Collins was reportedly being held in the Campbell County Adult Detention Center

10/08/09 – Guilty Plea and Sentencing

Matthew Collins, who was scheduled for trial today, has under a plea deal with prosecutors pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent liberties with a child under 15. Reportedly the two victims were 13 and 14-year-old girls.

Under the plea deal, prosecutors dropped two additional charges of electronic solicitation that would have carried five-year mandatory minimum sentences.

Judge John Cook sentenced Collins to 10 years in prison on each charge, with all but a year suspended on each and with the two sentences to run consecutive.

Once released from prison, Collins must register as a sex offender.

He is also prohibited from having any contact with the victims, he may not coach, teach or counsel anyone under 18 and may not have contact with anyone under 18 unless the child is a family member.
