(09/14/09 – Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report

Shaun C. Bryer, 28, a fifth-grade at Malletts Bay School in Colchester, Vermont who is also a Selectboard member in Morristown, Vermont has reportedly been arrested on allegations of the long term sexual abuse of two boys that were once his fifth-grade students.

Reportedly, Bryer been charged with five counts of lewd and lascivious conduct, two counts of possessing indecent material and 10 counts of aggravated sex assault.

It is alleged that Bryer had been sexually abusing the now 14-year-old boys in his residence for a period of years. The boys reportedly came forward with the allegations because they were concerned about other possible victims.

Bryer only recently began teaching at Mallets Bay School and previously taught at Morrisville Elementary School in Morrisville.

Police allege that Bryer admitted to performing numerous lewd acts on both boys as well as sexually assaulting one of the boys several times.

Following his arrest and initial court appearance at which he pleaded not guilty, Bryer was reportedly being held in the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in lieu of $250,000 bail.

09/16/09 – Bryer’s Teacher’s License Surrendered and Revoked

Reportedly, Shaun Bryer has surrendered his teacher’s license and the state Department of Education then revoked it.

09/21/09 – Concerns Raised Years Ago

The Burlington Free Press reports Lamoille County school administrators had concerns about Shaun Bryer’s conduct with students as early as the 2004-2005 school year, but didn’t take him out of the classroom until this spring.

The Burlington Free Press also reports that when Bryer left his teaching job in the Morristown School District in June with a job reference and a legal promise from school officials to frame his departure in a “positive” light and say only that it was motivated by “personal reasons” which gave no hint to the fact that Bryer’s conduct had generated serious concerns for at least four years.

Last Tuesday, the Colchester School Board scheduled a termination hearing for Bryer for October 6th.

School District officials confirmed on Thursday that Shaun Bryer taught summer classes at Swanton Elementary School.

10/01/09 – Additional Charges

Shaun Bryer, has been arrested again on additional child sex charges.

Bryer faces an additional count of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child and possession of child pornography.

According to police the latest arrest involves an additional victim unrelated to the 17 child sex charges he already faces.

Bryer entered a not guilty plea to the latest charges and once again was released into the custody of his parents.

Bryer’s latest release on bond to his parents custody require Bryer to surrender his cell phone, have no contact with the new alleged victim and have no access to computers or the Internet and his parents had to surrender their computer.

John V. Buttura, 54, a technology and shop teacher at Twinfield Union High School in Marshfield, Vermont has been arrested on allegations of having sex with a 16-year-old female student.

Vermont State Police say that Buttura is facing a felony charge of sexual exploitation of a minor.

It is alleged that Buttura engaged in a a two-month sexual relationship with the student.

Buttura is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge on Wednesday.

Buttura has reportedly suspended with pay.

04/28/09 – Case Update

The allegations against John Buttura came to the attention of police last Saturday when the father of the alleged victim confronted Buttura and his daughter at the school. State Police patroling in the vicinity of the school and responded to a “potential altercation” between the girl’s father and Buttura.

After an initial investigation, State Police arrested Buttura on Sunday and he remained jailed until Monday in lieu of $10,000 bond.

It is alleged that Buttura admitted to police that he had the sexual contact with a student.

On Monday Buttura made an initial court appearance and was subsequently released to await arraignment on Wednesday after Brian Grearson recused himself, saying he knows the defendant and in his career as a lawyer did legal work for Buttura’s family.

While free, Buttura is prohibited contact with females under the age of 18.

04/30/09 – Court Appearance

John Buttura made a court appearance Wednesday at which he pleaded innocent to a felony count of sexually exploiting a minor.

Buttura’s attorney unsuccessfully mounted a challenge to probable cause arguing that investigators did not present evidence to show that Buttura abused his authority to coerce the student to have sex with him.

The defense motion to dismiss was denied.

05/26/09 – Buttura Loses Teaching License

WCAX TV reports that the Vermont Department of Education has indicated that John Buttura’s teaching license has been revoked.

The station reports:

He’s lost his license following criminal charges accusing him of having sex with a student.

Webmaster’s note: Typically a teacher’s license is not revoked unless the teacher has been found guilty of a felony.

05/27/09 – Buttura Pleads Innocent

John Buttura pleaded innocent on Tuesday to violating his court imposed conditions by contacting the alleged victim in the case.

The prosecution asked that Buttura be held on $20,000 bail, but the judge deemed Buttura was not a risk of flight and denied the bail request.

Buttura remains free on bond.

08/19/09 – John Buttura Jailed Without Bail

John Buttura is being held without bail after allegedly having sex with the alleged victim again.

On Sunday, Buttura was arrested for a third time after police said the girl’s father called them with a tip.

Buttura is accused of having sex with the victim again, this time at a deer camp in Waterbury where they spent a night together last week

Buttura now faces four additional misdemeanor charges accusing him of having sex with the victim again last week and contacting her on three other occasions. At at court appearance he pleaded not guilty.

The judge ordered Buttura held without bail.

If convicted, Buttura could face more than seven years in prison.

Douglas S. Cavett, 43, a former teacher’s aide at Hunt Middle School in Burlington, Vermont has been arrested on allegations of the long term molestation of a boy, beginning when the boy was 11-years-old in 1991.

Cavett is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of driving with a suspended license. At an initial appearance Cavett’s attorney entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.

The alleged victim, who is now 28, reportedly told investigators that Cavett molested him in 1991 when Cavett was a teacher’s aide at Hunt Middle School in Burlington and that there were over 100 incidents of sex with Cavett between 1991 and 1997

The alleged victim has reportedly also told investigators that Cavett hosted numerous parties at his home in Milton where he allegedly gave booze and pot to young boys.

Cavett came to the attention of police earlier this month when the former student and alleged victim told his probation officer about being molested by Cavett between 1991 and 1997.

Police were conducting a search of Cavett’s home on Wednesday when Cavett arrived and reportedly tried to flee the scene. Police arrested him on a dead-end road in Milton.

Police say that Cavett was convicted in 2004 on two counts of improper touching of a 17-year-old boy and that he served 30 days in jail but was not placed on the sex offender registry.

School administrators have indicated that Cavett was hired as a para-educator for the district in November 1992 and left that job in 1995. It is further reported that Cavett became a sometime-substitute teacher for the district until 2001

Police continue to investigate this case and are asking anyone with further information on the matter to call the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations at 802-859-3084.

05/28/09 – Bail Denied

Reportedly, saying that Douglas Cavett is a significant risk to public safety, a judge has denied bail for Cavett.

Cavett will remain in jail pending trial.
