Prosecutors today dropped charges against Corey DeHart, a Halls High School teacher accused of having sex with a student.

Of the dropping of charges the prosecutor was quoted as saying, “Basically our case evaporated”. This is light of evidence that reportedly called into question the account of DeHart’s accuser and “explained away” what prosecutors had thought was evidence backing up the student’s claim.

(11/07/08 - Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report)

Robert Thomas Allen, Jr., 39, a drama and English teacher at Franklin County High School in Winchester, Tennessee has been arrested on charges of sexual battery by an authority figure.

It is alleged that on August 30th Allen sexually assaulted a 17-year-old male at the Bear Hollow Retreat in Monteagle, Tennessee. Reportedly Allen and the boy were there to put on a play.

It is alleged that Allen bought beer and smoked marijuana with the student before the sexual battery incident in which Allen allegedly kissed the boy on the mouth and ran his hand down the boy’s pants and touched his genital area.

When investigators went to Franklin County High School to interview Allen about the allegations he allegedly admitted to the alleged acts and told investigators that he has known his whole life that he is homosexual.

Allen came to the attention of authorities when the boy, who does not attend school in Franklin County, told his parents of the alleged sexual assault and the parents called authorities.

If convicted Allen could receive a three to fifteen year sentence and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Bond for Allen was reportedly set in the amount of $40,000.

Guilty

(10/29/08 - Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report)

Kevin M. Spurling, 43, a former special education teacher at Carter High School in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee has been sentenced following his guilty plea to one count of statutory rape in a case where Spurling was accused of sexually abusing his step-daughter, starting in January 2005.

Kevin M. Spurling

Criminal Court Judge Eugene Eblen sentenced Spurling to 90 days in jail for the statutory rape of the girl.

Once Spurling completes his 90 day jail sentence he will spend the remainder of his two year sentence on supervised probation and will be required to attend sex offender treatment.

The judge denied Johnson’s attorney’s request that Spurling be placed on judicial diversion, calling that option “not proper”, as after the two year probation Spurling’s criminal record would be cleared of the conviction.

Spurling’s attorney has said the punishment is “too harsh” and that the sentence is likely subject of appeal.

The victim has been critical of prosecutors, saying they let the charges drag on for years and dismissed an incest indictment against Spurling without consulting her.
