Thomas Garvin Best, a computer science teacher at Fredericksburg Christian Schools in Fredericksburg, Virginia has been arrested and charged with six counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor.

The sexual assaults against a female victim allegedly occurred between 2001 and 2007 with one charge of sexual battery for each year during which the alleged assaults occurred. The 2001 alleged assault is said to have occurred while the victim was a juvenile.

Following his indictment, Best was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned March 14.

11/11/08 - Sentencing

Thomas G. Best, who pleaded guilty in July to one count of indecent liberties and two counts of aggravated sexual battery, will spend one year in jail although he was sentenced to a total of 45 years on three charges.

All but one of the 45 year sentence were suspended by the judge who determined that Best presented a minimal risk of re-offending and was very remorseful.

Best will be on probation for the rest of his life.

Tawni L. Wimberley, 29, a former computer/technology teacher at Flagstaff High School in Flagstaff, Arizona already indicted by a grand jury on one count of sexual conduct with a minor has been charged with two additional counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

The original count alleged a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old boy last summer.

The current charges allege a sexual encounter last fall with a 16-year-old boy, a former student.

It is also alleged that Wimberley had consensual sexual relationships with several male students, most of them legal adults.

In spring of 2007, Wimberley requested and received a leave of absence for the 2007/2008 school year.

10/01/08 - Guilty Plea

Tawni Wimberley has pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

Wimberley faces up to 18 months in prison on each count but could receive probation under terms of the plea agreement.

10/30/08 - Sentencing

Tawni Wimberley has been sentenced to a suspended six month jail sentence, 100 hours of community service and supervised probation for three years.

Wimberley will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Kevin Wilson, 49, a computer science teacher at Bothwell Middle School in Marquette, Michigan has been arrested and charged two felony counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct.

Wilson was arrested on Friday the result of a month long investigation into allegations that he had sexual relationships with students.

Both counts center on allegations of sexual contact with the same victim. It is alleged that the sexual activity between Wilson and the girl took place when she was between 13 and 16-years-old and in or about 1996.

Reportedly Wilson, a 20 year employee of the school system, also taught band at high and middle schools over the course of his career with Marquette Area Public Schools.

Wilson made an initial court appearance this morning and has a preliminary hearing set for one week from today.

Wilson was being held in the Marquette County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Webmaster’s Note: Hopefully additional information will be forthcoming to clarify the age of the victim and the time frame of the alleged sexual assaults. What has been released thus far is contradictory to say the least.

10/27/08 - Kevin Wilson Bound Over For Trial

Kevin Wilson had a preliminary hearing today and the judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence for Wilson to stand trial on both counts with which he is charged.

Wilson is being held in the Marquette County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

10/28/08 - Additional Information and More Cases Possible

The Mining Journal reporting on Kevin Wilson’s preliminary hearing indicates that the Prosecutor has indicated that Wilson admitted to sexual acts with four other female students from a period from 1988 to 1996.

Reportedly prosecutors are considering information from a sixth and reportedly more recent witness.

James Albert Hirleman, 48, a technology and math teacher at Buljan Middle School in Roseville, California has been arrested on allegations of the continuous sexual abuse of a former student over several years.

Hirleman was arrested Wednesday night on charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor for crimes allegedly committed in 2001 and 2006.

According to the Rocklin Police Department news release:

The arrest was as a result of information developed from a previous arrest of another person by Rocklin Police and was made through the cooperation of several law enforcement agencies including Roseville PD, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, the Placer County Sheriff’s Department and Placer County’s Special Investigation Unit.

Following his arrest Hirleman was booked into Placer County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Reportedly Hirleman has been placed on unpaid administrative leave by the school system.

09/19/08 - Formal Charges and Not Guilty Plea

Today, James Hirleman was formally charged with two counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child under age 14; six counts of oral copulation of a person under 16 yrs old; four counts of lewd acts against someone under 15 and two acts of sodomy on a person under age 18.

Hirleman entered not guilty pleas to all charges.

It is being alleged that between 1999 and 2005 that Hirleman performed oral sex, sodomy, lewd and lascvious behavior repeatedly about 20 times upon the alleged victim who was between 13 and 18 years old at the time.

Reportedly the criminal complain reads, “Under surveillance, James Hirleman made concessions to (victim about) performing oral sex from Hirleman to (victim).”

Bail for Hirleman has been set at $350,000 and he has been ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim, including email and text messaging for three years.

Jerome Bennett III, 46, a technology and seventh and eighth-grade science teacher at the St. Monica School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania has been indicted on federal child pornography charges.

Federal agents seized two laptop computers, two external hard drivers and two flash drives allegedly containing images of child pornography Thursday afternoon.

If convicted, Bennett could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000.

In a statement posted on the school web site and sent to parents, school officials indicated that Bennett’s contract would not be renewed and that he would not be returning to the school. A school/parish spokesperson also indicated that administrators had requested the FBI examine school computers.
