Charges Dismissed

Wendi Smith Boutiette, 36, track coach at Coquille High School, in Coquille, Oregon was arrested on Saturday on allegations of sexually abusing at least one of her male student-athletes.

On Tuesday morning, Boutiette was arraigned on charges of felony sexual abuse, two counts of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor and sexual misconduct.

Boutiette came to the attention of authorities when a resident reported hearing that one of the male students on the track team had sexual relations with Boutiette.

As a result of the tip an investigation was undertaken during which police interviewed two other male students who said they also had sexual contact with Boutiette.

All of the alleged incidents are said to have happened between 2006 and the present and all are alleged to have occurred off-campus at a residence.

A school spokesperson said Tuesday that Boutiette has worked as the head track coach or assistant coach off and on since 2002.

Boutiette, who is reportedly married with two children, was reportedly released from jail on Sunday.

02/18/09 – Case Update

Wendi Boutiette made an initial appearance in court this morning at which time a preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 17th.

The judge agreed to release Boutiette from custody provided she avoids the alleged victim and Coquille School District property.

After the hearing Boutiette’s attorney David Terry criticized the Coquille Police Department, suggesting it rushed its investigation into allegations that Wendi Boutiette had sex with a minor.

(03/05/09 – Boutiette Resigns

Wendi Boutiette has submitted her resignation as track coach at Coquille High School.

Her next court date is set for March 17th.

03/17/09 – Arraignment

Wendi Boutiette was arraigned today.

At arraignment, Coos County Circuit Court Judge Paula Bechtold eased restrictions placed upon Boutiette while free on bond. She is now allowed to visit family members in Washington and attend her sons’ parent-teacher conferences. Previously she was prohibited from leaving the state or entering upon Coquille School District property.

Her attorney has said, “The alleged victim that’s been brought forward in this case is not being truthful.”

Boutiette’s attorney also said, “I’m anticipating there’s a good chance it will be dismissed before trial but if it doesn’t, then yeah, we will go to trial.”

Her next court appearance is set for April 30th.

Wendi Boutiette’s attorney David Terry is also seeking the return of more than 200 “bra and panty” photos seized as evidence by Coquille police after her arrest last month.

Terry subpoenaed Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier and Coquille Police Chief Mark Dannels to appear in court Tuesday to return the “lingerie” photos, charging that they aren’t relevant to the case against his client.

05/01/09 – Plea Change Hearing Continued

A plea change hearing scheduled for yesterday in the case of Wendi Boutiette has been continued to May 14th.

The delay is reportedly to permit prosecutors time to review results of an investigation conducted by the defense.

05/21/09 – Trial Date Set

Wendi Boutiette has been scheduled to go to trail on October 26th.

At yesterday’s hearing, Boutiette’s attorney attempted to convince the judge to dismiss the charges against his client. David Terry submitted the results of a polygraph examination which he said confirmed his client’s innocence. The judge refused to dismiss and set a trial date.

Terry is quoted as saying in regard to the offer of a plea deal by prosecutors, “Why would she plead guilty to a sex crime and be a registered sex offender when she did nothing?”

10/22/09 – DA Moves To Dismiss Charges

The Douglas County District Attorney’s office has filed a motion to dismiss sex-abuse charges against Wendi Boutiette.

According to Deputy District Attorney Shannon Sullivan the alleged victim is unwilling to testify in the trial set to start on October 26th.

Of the dismissal, Boutiette reportedly said she was “happy, elated, relieved, angry and frustrated because my life has been dragged through hell for nine months”.

Shane Adrian Mast, 31, a former teacher at Cottage Grove High School, in Cottage Grove, Oregon and a former varsity boys basketball coach at North Douglas High School in Drain, Oregon has reportedly been arrested on allegations of the sexual abuse of female students.

Reportedly, Mast turned himself in to Cottage Grove police on a warrant for multiple counts of misdemeanor third degree sex abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of minors.

Mast’s arrest comes after a reported nine-month investigation by the Cottage Grove Police Department.

Investigators believe that Mast had inappropriate relationships with more than two female students under the age of 18 while teaching at Cottage Grove High.

Police also say that additional charges are pending.

10/07/09 – Case Update

Tuesday night, Shane Mast reportedly e-mailed a statement to KVAL News which said in part:

I ask for people to hold their opinions until all facts are presented in court. Rumors can snowball into sensational stories from unsensational truths!

10/08/09 – Court Appearance

Shane Mast made a court appearance this morning at which time he entered a plea of not guilty to misdemeanor charge that he had illegal sexual contact with a female student.

Mast now reportedly faces 15 counts of third-degree sexual abuse and 15 counts of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor for alleged encounters with Cottage Grove high schoolers in Douglas County.

On Thursday, Mast’s bail on the Cottage Grove charge was set at $30,000.

Mast is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on the Douglas County charges.

10/13/09 – Arraignment Delayed

The arraignment of Shane Mast, scheduled for Monday in Douglas County Circuit Court, was canceled.

Mast’s attorney, David Terry, said the hearing was cancelled because they filed a notice of representation..

Terry, went on to say, “Shane Mast is not guilty of any of this, and has experienced a tremendous amount of support from educators, community members and even law enforcement.”

A new arraignment date was not set on Monday.

Guilty

Christopher John Klitgord, 29, a teacher at Milwaukie High School in Milwaukie, Oregon has been arrested and charged on allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

Klitgord came to the attention of authorities when the alleged victim told a school resource officer about an ongoing sexual relationship with Klitgord.

It is alleged that in phone calls which were recorded that the girl told Klitgord that police were trying to contact her and that Klitgord said “deny all of that,” and asked her, “did you erase everything on your phone, text messages etc.?”

Milwaukie Police say that there is no immediate information that Klitgord had similar relationships with other students. The department is however asking that anyone with information regarding this case or other potential victims contact them at 503-786-7500.

Reportedly, Klitgord has been placed on administrative leave by the school system pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Following his arrest, Klitgord was reportedly being held in the Multnomah County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

04/02/09 – Charges Upgraded To Felonies

Christopher Klitgord now faces two counts of second-degree sexual abuse, which are Class C felonies.

Misdemeanor charges previously filed against Klitgord were dismissed.

04/09/09 – More Charges and Arraignment

Christopher Klitgord was arraigned today on six charges of sex abuse and two counts of tampering with a witness.

The new charges include four counts of sex aubse and two counts of witness tampering.

Klitgord pleaded not guilty to all charges on Thursday.

Investigators allege that he had sex with the same female student on six occasions and then tried to get her to lie about it.

07/02/09 – Guilty Plea and Sentencing

In a plea deal with prosecutors, Christopher Klitgord pleaded guilty today to two counts of second-degree sexual abuse. All other charges were dropped by prosecutors.

Multnomah County Circuit Judge Julie E. Frantz sentenced Klitgord to 14 months in prison, ordered him to pay his victim $15,000 with $10,000 due immediately and the remainder after he is released from prison.

In addition, Klitgord is required to serve five years probation, to submit a DNA sample and to undergo a minimum of six months of psychiatric counseling.

Klitgord was ordered to register a sex offender.

09/28/09 – Case Update

The Oregonian reports that the North Clackamas School District in hiring Christopher Klitgord failed to discover that New York City school officials had fired him the year before for dating a 16-year-old student, that he had lost his New York state teaching license and had forged a letter of recommendation.
