Dustin L. Powers, 36, a former physical education teacher at John Simpson Middle School, in Mansfield, Ohio who in June pleaded guilty to sexual battery of a 14-year-old girl has been sentenced.

At sentencing today Powers received a four-year prison sentence which was suspended, five years of probation, he will be required to pay a $4,500 fine, to pay for counseling for the victim and her mother, to register as a sex offender and to undergo sex offender treatment.

Powers who is married and has two children of his own allegedly became involved with the girl in 2005. The relationship allegedly started with kissing and progressed to a sexual relationship.

Powers came to the attention of police when the girl’s mother discovered journals and letters between her daughter and Powers, confronted Powers and went to the police.

The prosecutor stated previously that the girl was very distraught because Powers led her to believe they were going to have an ongoing relationship.

Webb David Rieder, 32, a classroom aid at Valley Forge Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio has been arrested and charged with pandering sexually oriented matter involving a juvenile.

The arrest of Rieder is the result of an investigation which began in July when police detected someone distributing child pornography via the Internet. Police say that the someone was Rieder and that they downloaded a file that contained a move of “preteen boys engaged in sexual activity”.

Earlier this week police executed a search warrant at Rieder’s residence and seized two computers and over 100 CD’s and DVD’s.

Investigators do not believe that any local children were victimized in the child pornography or that Rieder had molested any children at the school.

Following his arrest Rieder was being held in the Franklin County Jail and investigators say that additional charges were pending the outcome of the investigation.

Mark A. Common, 22, a tutor and wrestling coach at Malvern High School in Malvern, Ohio has been arrested on two counts of gross sexual imposition in a case alleging a 16-year-old female student victim.

It is alleged that Common started a relationship with the girl through text messaging in September.

Reportedly the girl’s mother called police after Common allegedly tried to break into the girl’s home last weekend.

Common entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment this afternoon and his bail was set at $250,000 cash.

09/25/08 - Mark Common Arrested For Intimidation

Mark Common has been arrested on allegations of witness intimidation.

Common is charged with two third-degree felony counts of intimidation of a witness and is jailed awaiting a bond hearing.

Carolynn Hatcher, 25, a teacher and housemother at Midwestern Home for Children in the village of Pleasant Plain, Ohio has been charged on allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male resident of the home and became pregnant with the teen’s child.

The alleged victim has run away creating an unusual dilemma for officials who don’t think they can enlist the public’s help to find him, since he’s both a foster child and an alleged sexual-abuse victim and both classes of individuals fall under privacy shield concerns.

Police have been searching for the boy since he fled on Saturday when a court-appointed special advocate took the boy to get ice cream at a shopping mall. The special advocate tracked the boy down initially but he then ran away again.

Hatcher came to the attention of authorities when another child living in the group home reported the relationship.

Hatcher has been indicted on six counts of sexual battery. The alleged crimes reportedly happened during April and May of this year. Hatcher, who worked at the facility with her husband was fired by the group home in June.

Hatcher, who is now reportedly in the midst of a divorce, posted $30,000 bond and was released Monday from the Warren County Jail and is reportedly staying with a friend.

Investigators for Children’s Services do not believe there are additional victims.

09/17/08 - Guilty Plea

Carolynn Hatcher pleaded guilty this morning in Warren County Common Pleas Court, Lebanon, to three charges of sexual battery.

In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped three additional sexual battery charges.

Hatcher faces from one to five years in prison at sentencing.

She will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Kathryn Gill, 29, a former teacher at Fairless Middle School in Navarre, Ohio has pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

Reportedly Gill admitted having a sexual relationship with a boy who is between 13 and 16-years-old. The sexual conduct between Gill and the boy was alleged to have taken place between April and July of this year.

The boy is reportedly a student in the Fairless Local Schools but prosecutors did not specify which school the boy attends as the charge was based on the boy’s age rather than a teacher/student sexual relationship.

Gill could face up to five years at sentencing in September although the judge reportedly favors some form of probation.

Gill will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

09/15/08 - Sentencing

Kathryn Gill was today sentenced to four years in prison, with the option of probation after six months.

Gill will be subject to sex offender counseling, she must register as a sex offender for 25 years and was fined $2,500.

Reportedly, Stark County Common Pleas Judge Richard D. Reinbold Jr. acknowledged that had the offender been a man and the victim a girl that he ” likely would be tougher” in sentencing.
