Ernest James Nichols, 44, a physical education teacher and golf coach at Ranson Middle School in Charlotte, North Carolina has reportedly been arrested on allegations of the rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Nichols is reportedly charged with a total of 29 counts including second-degree rape, statutory rape, kidnapping, forcible sex offense, crimes against nature and indecent liberties.

Reportedly, the girl called the police department on Wednesday night and said she had been raped six times at the home starting months ago, when she was 15.

Huntersville police searched Nichols’ home on Thursday as part of the investigation.

The school web site indicates that Nichols graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and has taught in Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System for 14 years, including North Meck, South Meck, and Garinger.

It goes on to indicate that Nichols is the golf coach at Ranson Middle school. He is a mentor for the Best Men program at Ranson and is also a mentor teacher to younger staff memebers.

According to the school web site Nichols is married and has two sons.

Following his arrest, Nichols was reportedly being held in the Mecklenburg County jail in lieu of $810,000 bond.

10/14/09 – Court Appearance

Ernest Nichols made a court appearance this morning at which the assistant district attorney indicated that investigators have videotapes showing Ernest Nichols having sex with the victim.

The assistant DA went on to indicate that those tapes could lead to federal child pornography charges.

Nichols remains jailed in lieu of $810,000 bond.

Doug Ebersbach, 50, a former teacher at William Ellis Middle School in Advance, North Carolina has reportedly been charged on allegations of having sex with a female student.

Ebersbach was arrested in New Philadelphia, Ohio over the weekend and is scheduled for an initial court appearance there today. Following his arrest, Ebersbach was being held without bond pending extradition to North Carolina.

Reportedly, Ebersbach is initially charged in North Carolina with four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor and one count of breaking and entering.

Ebersbach came to the attention of law enforcement in Davie County, North Carolina when a woman called police claiming Ebersbach broke into her house. Investigators say that Ebersbach didn’t break-in but that the woman’s 13-year-old daughter gave Ebersbach a key to the house. It is alleged that Ebersbach and the girl were involved in a sexual relationship.

A spokesperson for the Davie County School system has indicated that Ebersbach was absent from school September 15th through the 25th and resigned his position on September 27th, the day after the alleged victim’s mother contacted authorities.

Davie County Sheriff Andy Stokes has indicated that the investigation has just begun and that a list of about 20 young girls was discovered during a search of Ebersbach’s vehicle at his home and that investigators have several other persons of interest that they will talk to concerning Ebersbach. The sheriff also indicated that additional charges against Ebersbach will be forthcoming.

Reportedly, Ebersbach has worked for the Davie County School System for four years and prior to moving to William Ellis Middle School for the current school had previously taught at South Davie Middle School and prior to that worked for the Wayne County school system.

10/08/09 – Doug Ebersbach Extradited

Reportedly, Doug Ebersbach was extradited to North Carolina today and arrived in Davie County around 4 p.m.

Davie County Sheriff Andy Stokes has said that additional charges will be brought against Ebersbach now that more victims are coming forward.

The Sheriff also indicated that Ebersbach could have taken indecent liberties with as many as 20 to 30 girls.

10/09/09 – Case Update

Today, a judge has issued an order prohibiting Doug Ebersbach any contact with the alleged victims.

The judge also maintained bond for Ebersbach in the amount of $750,000.

Reportedly, Ebersbach remains jailed in lieu of bond.

Walter Stiehm, a student at Appalachian State University who was serving as a student teacher at East Wilkes High School in Ronda, North Carolina has reportedly been arrested on allegations of felony sex crimes involving a student.

Reportedly, Stiehm is charged with sex offense involving a student and taking indecent liberties with a student.

Investigators have indicated the alleged sex crimes were committed off campus.

Reportedly, Stiehm had been working at the school for about six weeks and was dismissed when the allegations came to light.

Stiehm is reportedly free on bond.
