(07/06/09 – Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report)

John Calvin Hegedus, 32, a religion teacher at Holy Name Catholic School in San Antonio, Texas has been indicted by a grand jury on allegations that he solicited a 15-year-old boy for sex and traveled to Seguin, Texas to sexually assault him.

John Calvin Hegedus

A Guadalupe County grand jury has indicted Hegedus on two counts of on-line solicitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual assault of a child.

Hegedus was arrested in April when he arrived at the home of a boy that he had allegedly sent nearly 100 text messages to on Easter Sunday. It is alleged that some of the messages were sexually explicit, using graphic detail to described specific sex acts he wanted to perform on the boy.

Hegedus came to the attention of police when the boy’s parents called regarding the alleged text messages. Officers responded to the text messages and allege that Hegedus came to Seguin believing he would be having sex with the boy.

Reportedly, Hegedus was a seminarian at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin over the summer of 2007, and investigators said in court documents he had maintained contact with the boy and his family for two years.

Since his arrest, Hegedus has been held in the Guadalupe County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond.

If convicted he faces a minimum of 2 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years in prison on each of the two most serious counts and from 2 to 10 years in prison on each of the remaining counts.

During his court appearance Hegedus admitted he sexually solicited a Seguin area boy in text messages last Easter Sunday.

If the judge accepts the plea deal, and it appears it will be accepted, Hegedus will be placed on 10-year deferred adjudication probation and prosecutors will drop a charge of attempted sexual assault of a child.

Sentencing is set for late August and the judge lowered Hegedus’ bail from $300,000 to $5,000 Monday and Hegedus was released on bail to await sentencing.

10/20/09 – Formal Sentencing

In accordance with the plea agreement, John Calvin Hegedus has been sentenced to 10 years of deferred adjudication probation.

The judge warned Hegedus that if he does not successfully complete probation, he faces up to 20 years in state prison.
