James W. Young, 33, a band teacher at Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa was arrested Thursday in an Internet sex sting after he allegedly attempted to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex at a DeWitt, Iowa hotel.
Young has been charged with attempt to entice away a minor. The charge is an aggravated misdemeanor carrying a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
It is alleged that Young communicated with the undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old girl, set up a meeting at the hotel, discussed performing an illegal sex act with the girl and then traveled to the hotel at the designated meeting time.
Young has been placed on suspension with pay by the school system.
Following his arrest Young was released on bond on the condition he has no contact with anyone 18-years-old or younger on the Internet.
12/16/08 – Young Arrested On Federal Charges
James Young has been arrested on federal charges of attempting to entice a minor to engage in illicit sexual activities.
Young was arrested on Monday by federal authorities, appeared in U.S. District Court in Davenport and was being detained pending a full detention hearing.
If convicted of the federal charges Young faces a statutory penalty of 10 years to life imprisonment and a fine not to exceed $250,000.

A federal jury has convicted James Young of using the Internet to knowingly entice a minor to engage in illicit sexual activity.
Young faces a penalty of 10 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 at sentencing.
10/16/09 – Sentencing Date Set
After a couple delays in sentencing, James W. Young is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday for using the Internet to attempt to entice a minor to perform illicit sexual acts.
10/19/09 – Sentencing
At his sentencing hearing, James Young apologized to his family and school for embarrassing them.
Young’s attorney presented the judge with 3 dozen letters of support from family and friends and argued that Young, the father of 3, had no criminal history.
The judge wasn’t moved, apparently.
James Young was sentenced to 13 and 1/3 years in federal prison to be followed by 10 years of supervised release during which he is banned from using the internet and owning a camera unless his parole officer approves.
