(05/02/08 - Initial BBT Report)

Keith E. Marshall, 48, a special education teacher in the Topeka Unified School District 501 in Topeka, Kansas has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of sexual battery against a female student.

It was alleged that Marshall who was monitoring in-school detention at Capital City Schools used his cell phone camera to take pictures of a girl’s breast.

Marshall was also originally charged with obstruction for allegedly throwing the cell phone into the Kansas River a few days after the picture taking incident. The obstruction charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.

Marshall was sentenced to one year in county jail with that term suspended, 12 months of supervised probation and is required to register as a sex offender.

Marshall also gave up his special needs teaching license. He had been a special needs teacher in the district for almost 25 years.

Anthony Baker, 36, a former librarian at Muncie Elementary School in Leavenworth, Kansas has been sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison for producing child pornography.

Anthony Baker

In October of last year, Baker pleaded guilty to one count of producing child pornography in a case involving a 10-year-old girl as the victim.

Baker came to the attention of authorities when his wife discovered he was chatting over the Internet with underage girls and collecting pornography that included sexual images of children. His wife turned his computer over to law enforcement and investigators discovered images of Baker and the girl performing oral sex on one another and photos of him penetrating the girl.

At the time of his arrest Baker had worked for the school system for 10 years, first as a teacher and later as the school librarian.

In addition to the prison term Baker will also have to register as a sex offender and serve 20 years of supervised release after he gets out of prison.

Baker also faces numerous state charges arising from his sexual abuse of a child.

(6/07/07 - Initial BBT Report)

Meredith L. Kane, 24, a former teacher at Lawrence High School, in Lawrence, Kansas has waived her preliminary hearing on two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy.

Meredith L. Kane

Kane was arrested in March on allegations she was sexually involved with a 15-year-old boy. Thus far it has not been revealed if the boy was a student of Kane’s or was simply a student at the school.

Following her arrest on March 16 Kane was released on $15,000 bond. She was suspended from her job at the school and her contract was not renewed.

6/20/07 - Arraignment Continued

Arraignment was continued until July 2nd. According to Kane’s attorney a plea deal is in the works.

7/02/07 - Guilty Plea

Meredith L. Kane has entered a guilty plea to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a 15-year-old male student.

Kane was originally charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped one of the aggravated indecent liberties count and both of the sodomy counts.

Sentencing for Meredith Kane is set for October 12th and she faces a sentencing range from 55 to 247 months.

07/24/07 - Records Access Granted

On Monday, Kane’s attorney was granted access to the victim’s psychological records.

8/28/07 - Kane Arrested and Jailed

Meredith Kane was arrested and jailed Monday afternoon for violating a no-contact order issued by the court.

Kane appeared in court today and the $15,000 bond she was on pending sentencing was revoked and she was ordered held in jail until her sentencing October 29th.

It is being reported that on Sunday family friends of the boy saw him getting out of Kane’s car. When questioned the boy admitted that he had seen her five times since her guilty plea in July. During this time Kane was under order, as condition of bond, to stay away from the victim.

Kane is scheduled for trial on October 2nd on the misdemeanor charge of violating a protective order. If convicted of that charge Kane could face up to an additional year in confinement.

10/29/07 - Kane diagnosed Bipolar

Meredith Kane has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A psychologist testifying at her sentencing hearing says this condition inhibited her judgment. Kane’s, now 16-year-old victim also suffers from the disorder.

According to Psychologist Bruce Cappo Kane saw herself as someone who could help the student, who was having problems himself and this led to a consensual sexual relationship.

Kane’s sentencing hearing was continued to December 17.

12/19/07 - Sentencing

Douglas County District Judge Stephen Six this afternoon denied a motion by the attorney of Meredith L. Kane for probation and sentenced her to prison for almost five years.

The victim in the case on Monday had asked that Kane not be sentenced to prison and said he would have no contact with her if she were placed on probation, rather than given a prison term.

1/01/08 - Misdemeanor Charge Dropped

On 12/31/07 Douglas County District Court Judge Stephen Six has, at the request of prosecutors, dropped a misdemeanor charge of violation of a protective order against Meredity Kane.

The charge, filed in August, resulted from Kane continuing to see the boy after being ordered not to do so.

The dropping of this charge does not alter Kane’s 59 month prison sentence on her felony conviction.

1/09/08 - Kane Appealing Sentence

Meredith Kane convicted of having a sexual relationship with an underage student is appealing her nearly five-year sentence on the basis that it is too harsh.

Not Guilty

(8/17/07 - Initial BBT Report)

Rick Cue, 51, a social studies teacher, head coach of the wrestling team and girls’ softball team at Ulysses High School, in Ulysses, Kansas has been charged with two counts of rape, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated incest.

The allegedly victim was being identified initially only as “a 16-year-old student”. A subsequent report reveals the alleged victim is a female student. (Thanks for the link Kassie)

Reportedly Cue was arrested on Monday and released from the Grant County Jail on Wednesday on $50,000 bond.

Reportedly the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation and the Grant County Sheriff’s Office is refusing to release Cue’s mug shot claiming the investigation is on-going.

Cue was reportedly the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association coach of the year in 1996 and the Kansas Wrestling Officials Association coach of the year in 1998.

Reportedly school officials are saying that Cue was was suspended with pay on Tuesday. School officials are refusing to reveal how the school found out about the accusations.

The following is an Editorial/Opinion of the Webmaster of BadBadTeacher.com

Obviously no one in authority and with knowledge of this case wants to reveal anything.

It is not often, if ever, that authorities refuse to release the mug shot of those arrested and/or charged with a crime.

The sex of the alleged victim has not thus far been identified, leaving one to speculate as to whether it was a female or male student involved nor has the nature of the aggravated incest charge been revealed.

Whether Cue owing to his status as a former ‘coach of the year’, his connections to the community and possibly to state officials has anything to do with this lack of information is unknown.

What is known is that this case is being handled in a ‘hush-hush manner’ that while attempting to keep the nature of the allegations under wraps is going to fuel speculation, rumors and gossip.

Is this the way they always do things in Kansas or this just a ’special case’?

What are they trying to hide?

And why?

12/14/07 - Not Guilty

After three and a half hours of deliberations the jury in the rape trial of Rick Cue found him NOT GUILTY of raping a 16-year-old female student.

Previously the judge had dismissed a charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child to include lewd fondling or touching of the girl.

The defense based a major portion of its case upon a grievance between Cue and the girl’s mother.
