Ashley Jo Beach, 37, a math and science teacher at Meridian Middle School in Meridian, Idaho has reportedly been arrested on allegations of having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy who is a former student.

Beach was booked into the Ada County jail on the charge of lewd conduct with a minor under the age of 16.

Beach came to the attention of police when residents in the area of Cherry Lane and Vineyards in Meridian called police saying that they saw something suspicious about 9:30 p.m.

When police responded to the call of suspicious activity it is alleged that they found Beach and the 13-year-old boy laying on the ground between some bushes and a fence. It is further alleged that when they questioned Beach and the boy that there were inconsistencies in their stories and as a result detectives were called in to investigate.

Detectives say that the boy was a student of Beach’s last year and that the two have been involved in a sexual relationship since April.

Beach is being held in the Ada County Jail and is set to be arraigned this afternoon.

10/02/09 – Grand Jury Indictment

An Ada County grand jury has indicted Ashley J. Beach on three counts of felony lewd conduct with a child under the age of 16.

The grand jury found there was enough evidence of a crime to establish probable cause and send the case directly to District Court for trial.

Beach is reportedly free on a $300,000 bond.

10/20/09 – Guilty Plea

Ashley Jo Beach pleaded guilty in an Ada County courtroom today to one count of lewd conduct with a child under the age of 16.

Two other counts of lewd conduct were dropped as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Sentencing is set for December 22nd.

10/27/09 – Husband of Ashley Beach Arrested

Shawn Beach, husband of Ashley Beach and a former Ada county sheriff’s employee is arrested accused of video voyeurism.

It is alleged that Shawn Beach sent photos of female jail inmates to his wife’s phone.

The images were found on Ashley Beach’s cell phone during the course of the investigation of her activities. Investigators allege that they traced those images back to Shawn Beach’s cell phone.

If convicted on the video voyeurism count, Shawn Beach faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Shawn Beach’s employment with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office has reportedly been terminated.

Kari Atkinson, 28, a physical education teacher at Sandcreek Middle School in Idaho Falls, Idaho has reportedly been arrested on allegations of a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old male student.

Reportedly, Atkinson faces five counts of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under 16.

Atkinson made an initial court appearance today and was ordered by Judge Linda Cook to stay away from children except for her own.

Atkinson came to the attention of authorities by way of an anonymous tip.

Reportedly, Atkinson is on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Atkinson has a preliminary hearing set for September 16th.

10/14/09 – Guilty Plea

Kari Atkinson has reportedly pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd conduct with a minor.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop three other counts against Atkinson.

The judge ordered Atkinson not to have any contact with the victim and to undergo a psychological evaluation.

Atkinson faces a maximum penalty of up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine.

Sentencing is set for December 17th. .

Anna Margaret Bettencourt, 38, a history teacher at Bliss High School in Bliss, Idaho has been charged with two counts of sexual battery of a minor.

The alleged victim is reportedly 16-year-old male student and the allegations involve incidents occurring between August 15 and September 30, 2008.

It is alleged that Bettencourt and the boy had intercourse twice during the August to September time frame, once on the floor of the school’s agriculture shop on a Sunday and again in the boy’s pickup truck after they met at the school. Police say that both Bettencourt and the boy have admitted these alleged sex acts.

Authorities have determined that a school aide had first heard about the alleged sexual encounters in November but had not reported it until Tuesday. On February 13th, a school official called the Gooding County sheriff’s office to report the allegations.

Reportedly Bettencourt was arraigned on the charges yesterday and a preliminary hearing has been set for March 19.

Media reports indicate that, due to an undisclosed conflict of interest, the Gooding County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will petition the court to appoint a special prosecuting attorney to handle the case.

04/16/09 – Court Appearance

Anna Margaret Bettencourt made an appearance today in Gooding County Magistrate Court and waived her preliminary hearing.

Magistrate Casey Robinson bound over Bettencourt to 5th District Court for arraignment on April 28th.

Reportedly the prosecution has offered Bettencourt a plea deal that would involve the dropping of one count and a minimum prison sentence of 3 years.

05/13/09 – Bettencourt Wants More Time To Consider Deal

Anna Margaret Bettencourt has requested and received additional time to consider a plea deal with prosecutors.

Bettencourt’s arraignment has been rescheduled for June 25th.

06/16/09 – Guilty Plea

Anna Bettencourt has reportedly pleaded guilty to a single count felony sexual battery of a minor.

In return the prosecution dropped of a second count of the same charge and a $5,000 fine as part of the plea deal.

The prosecution is seeking a prison term of at least three years.

09/08/09 – Sentencing

Special Prosecutor Mike Seib said under a popular double standard, that if a 40 year man and 16 year old girl were involved in this situation, the man would undoubtedly be sent to jail. Defense attorney James Meservy stated that just because this is a serious offense, that doesn’t mean jail time is necessary.

District Judge John Butler sentenced Bettencourt up to ten years in prison, with the first three years fixed.

The judge then suspended the sentence and ordered Bettencourt to serve a six month rider program, before deciding her ultimate sentence.
