Guilty

McKell Shurtliff, 23, a former assistant softball coach at Payson High School in Payson, Utah has been arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl on the team.

Reportedly, Shurtliff is charged with three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, which is a third-degree felony.

It is alleged that Shurtliff engaged in a three-month sexual relationship with the girl beginning in March, 2008 and that there were multiple sexual encounters which occurred within that time frame.

It is further alleged that Shurtliff admitted to the relationship and sexual encounters, telling police she knew it was wrong, but she loved the victim.

Following her arrest, Shurtliff was reportedly being held in the Utah County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail.

Shurtliff was reportedly “released” by the school, at the time the investigation into the allegations began in the fall of 2008.

10/08/09 – Guilty Plea To Lesser Charge

In a plea deal with prosecutors, McKell Shurtliff has reportedly pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of lewdness involving a child.

In return, prosecutors dropped two felony counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and a felony count lewdness involving a child.

Sentencing is set for November 17th and Shurtliff faces a maximum of one year in jail.

11/18/09 – Sentencing

McKell Shurtliff has been sentenced to 120 days in jail and two years of probation.

Shurtliff is also required to complete sex-offender treatment and will be on the state sex-offender registry for 10 years.

Guilty

Megan Sainsbury, 31, a physical education teacher at Prospect High School in Saratoga, California has been arrested on suspicion of having an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

Reportedly court documents indicate that Sainsbury was arrested Wednesday on three misdemeanor counts of “annoying or molesting” a 17-year-old student.

It is allleged that between October 2007 and January 2009 Sainsbury and the student kissed and touched and exchanged text messages of a romantic nature. It is further alleged that Sainsbury bought the girl gifts, including a cell phone, to allegedly entice the her to continue their relationship. It has not been alleged that Sainsbury and the girl engaged in sex.

Following her arrest Sainsbury was released on bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on April 27.

Reportedly Sainsbury has been placed on leave by the school system.

11/10/09 – No Contest Plea

In a plea deal with prosecutors, Megan Sainsbury has reportedly pleaded no contest to one felony count of attempted sexual penetration.

Sentencing is set for December 18th and Sainsbury faces a maximum of one year in the county jail.

Sainsbury’s attorney has indicated that after Sainsbury serves most of her sentence, he plans to seek a hearing to request that her felony be reduced to a misdemeanor.

Charges Dismissed

Margaret Keely, 53, a teacher at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, Michigan has been arrested and charged with failure to report abuse after her husband William Keely, a registered sex offender, is arrested on allegations of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says that Margaret Keely befriended the girl when she was a freshman in 2006, and invited her to do jobs around their home in Brandon Township, where the teen met 64-year-old William Keely, a convicted sex offender.

The sheriff went on to say that in the months leading up to the assault, William Keely engaged in “classic molester” behavior by showing the girl pornographic material and asking her to test out sex toys.

The girl told police that William Keely invited her over to watch a movie on June 26 and sexually assaulted her. The girl said that she fled the Keely home, drove home and reported the incident to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department the next day.

William Keely is being held on $6.5 million bond.

Margaret Keely has been released on bond.

Their next court date is July 15th.

07/16/08 – Court Hearing – Amended Bond Conditions

According to a report from “The Oxford Leader”, it was revealed in a court hearting that Margaret Keely allegedly attempted to illegally acquire the alleged victim’s records from the high school.

During the hearing the judge imposed a no contact order on Keely prohibiting her from contacting school employees.

10/03/08 – District Brings Tenure Charges Against Keely

Margaret Keely is facing termination as a result of her alleged role in her husband’s alleged sexual abuse of a student.

10/28/08 – Keely Appeals Tenure Charges

Margaret Keely has filed an appeal of the tenure charges against her.

11/24/08 – Case Update

On October 30th, while appearing in court for pretrial hearing Margaret Keely allegedly communicated with the alleged victim in the sexual abuse case and as a result was charged with contempt of court and jailed.

Reportedly, with the alleged victim on the witness stand, prosecution and defense attorneys were called to the bench for a discussion with the judge. With the judge and attorneys occupied at the bench the court recorder allegedly witnessed Margaret Keely say or mouth two phrases to the victim, “I love you” and “I miss you.”

Reportedly, Keely was being held in lieu of a $250,000 cash bond.

02/08/09 – Margaret Keely Drops Appeal of Firing

Margaret Keely has withdrawn her appeal challenging the Oxford school district’s decision to fire her.

The judge for the State Tenure Commission issued an order of dismissal of Keely’s appeal of tenure charges with prejudice.

Keely will not be able to refile the appeal at a later date.

04/27/09 – William Arthur Keely Found Dead In Jail Cell

William Arthur Keely, husband of Margaret Keely, was found dead about 5:30 a.m. Monday in his Oakland County Jail cell.

A preliminary investigation suggests that Keely apparently cut his wrists with a sharp object and bled to death.

11/09/09 – Charges Dismissed

Reportedly, the charge against Margaret Keely was dropped earlier this year.

According to Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper, the misdemeanor charge of failure to report child abuse, on which Keely was arraigned in July 2008, has been dropped.
