Richard Koppenaal, 37, a math teacher at Sussex County Vo-Tech School, in Sparta, New Jersey has been arrested on allegations of having sexual contact and/or sexual relations with two male students.

Koppenaal is charged with one count of sexual assault and three counts of criminal sexual contact and following his arrest was held in the Sussex County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Reportedly Koppenaal is accused of having sexual contact with two students from the school between October 2006 and October 2007 and with committing acts of sexual assault involving penetration with one of his students in September and October 2007.

At a court appearance Monday Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti maintained the bail amount of $100,000 and ordered as conditions of bail that Koppenaal to have no contact with the alleged victims or any Sussex Tech students and to stay away from the high school’s grounds.

Koppenaal who has worked at the school for four years has been suspended with pay. He was the Student Council advisor, a sophomore class co-adviser and a “teacher leader” who analyzed test scores, data, and other aspects of the high school.

Richard Koppenaal is the second Sussex County teacher accused of having sexual relations with a student this year. James Cunneely is facing multiple charges alleging the sexual abuse of a female student.

Koppenaal is set for arraignment on December 10.

11/16/17 Koppenaal Released on Bail and Suspended By School

Sussex County Technical School Board on Thursday approved the suspension with pay of Richard Koppenall.

Koppenaal has been released from the Sussex County Jail after posting $75,000 bail. Conditions of release specify that he must have no contact with Sussex Tech students, the campus and the alleged victims.

One of the alleged victims has told police that he and Koppenaal used a room at the Econo Lodge on Route 206 in Andover Township for sexual encounters. Allegedly police have received from the Econo Lodge a registration card with Koppenaal’s name, address and license plate number and the room number he was given. A log sheet shows he paid $89.95 for the room on September 28.

Reportedly the two alleged victims are between ages 16 and 18 and the first boy led detectives to the second.

09/15/08 – Not Guilty Pleas

Richard Koppenaal appeared in court today for arraignment and entered not guilty pleas to all charges.

Koppenaal, who faces up to 62 years in prison if convicted on all charges, has reportedly declined a plea offer from prosecutors who now say there is no new plea deal in the works.

Koppenall remains free on $100,000 bond.

Richard Eidam, 55, an auto shop teacher at Parkway West Area Vocational School in North Fayette Township, Pennsylvania has been arrested on charges of indecent assault, endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors.

It is alleged that Eidam hugged and kissed a 15-year-old boy in October. The boy has told police that Eidam had kissed him on the head and neck.

During the course of the investigation into allegations involving the 15-year-old, police interviewed another boy, now 18, who allegedly told them that Eidam would hug and kiss the him on the lips. The second boy told police the alleged incident took place during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years.

In both instances it is alleged that Eidam would tell the boys to stay behind in the classroom while other students were excused and were changing clothes.

Today Eidam turned himself in at a judge’s office and was released on a promise to show up for all court hearings.

Pending the conclusion of the case, Eidam has been suspended by the school, prohibited from being on campus or from contacting any students.

Richard Eidam has a court appearance set for March 3rd.

05/21/08 – All Charges Dismissed!

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Donna Jo McDaniel has dismissed all charges against Richard Eidam, ruling that there was not enough evidence presented at Eidam’s preliminary hearing to hold the case for court.

Eidam’s attorney said, “There was really never a case” and the judge obviously agreed.

Shawn Jeter, 34, a vocational agriculture teacher at Pinedale High School, in Pinedale, Wyoming has been charged on allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a female student.

Jeter is charged with crimes in two counties.

News media reports indicate that Jeter faces four counts of second-degree sexual assault and six counts of third-degree sexual assault in Sublette County and that he faces counts of third-degree sexual assault and indecent liberties with a child in Natrona County.

It is alleged that the sexual relationship between Jeter and the girl began in October 2004 and ended in February 2007. The alleged sexual activity between Jeter and the girl in Natrona County is said to have taken place in in 2006 and 2007 when Jeter and the student were in Casper, Wyoming for school activities.

Allegedly in March Jeter admitted to investigators that he had sex with the girl and that he gave her a Valentine’s Day card and money in January.

Reportedly Jeter came to the attention of authorities when another student reported seeing Jeter and the girl kiss during school hours and in a school facility.

Jeter who is free on bond is scheduled for trial in Sublette County in November.

04/23/08 – Guilty Plea and Sentencing

Shawn Jeter has pleaded guilty in Natrona County District Court to charges of third-degree sexual assault and indecent liberties with a minor.

Jeter has been sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison. The sentence will run concurrent with an additional 15 to 20 years in prison handed down in Sublette and Converse counties in cases involving the same victim.
