(11/01/07 - Initial BBT Report)

Calvin James Staten, 44, the former girls basketball coach at Butler High School, in Huntsville, Alabama has been sentenced following a plea deal in which Staten, facing felony charges of first-degree sexual abuse, pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of harassment.

Calvin James Staten

As a result of the plea deal, Circuit Judge Karen K. Hall sentenced Staten to serve the maximum of 90 days on each charge to run consecutively, then suspended the sentence and placed Staten on two years probation. In exchange for the guilty plea prosecutors dropped the felony sexual abuse charges.

Also as part of the plea agreement, Staten agreed to permanently relinquish his Alabama teaching license.

Staten was indicted in April 2005 for sexually abusing four basketball players during the 2003-2004 season. His first trial ended in a mistrial when the jury reported that it was still deadlocked after three days of deliberations. During that trial the young women testified that Staten had fondled them or made sexually inappropriate remarks to them.

Assistant District Attorney Leann White said that the plea deal had the approval of the alleged victims and will keep Staten away from students.

Reportedly Staten is also facing trial on an unrelated charge of public lewdness on allegations that he engaged in a sex act with a woman at a car wash in Huntsville last December.
